How about a better scope for your current rifle?

I'd start with a cup of decaf.

The further you want to shoot, the more relaxed and calm you need to be...

also - define "hit a target".
Just because you can "hit" a target - doesn't mean you're proficient.

Something in .308 or 7mm mag with a floating barrel, a good bipod and a proper scope.

There are plenty of great bolt action Rifles that fit that role.

Not that expensive either. (well, a good scope will cost more than you think....)

You can get a Steven's .308 for around $300 in some places. That's basically a savage barreled action with no accutrigger.
Throw down another $100 or so upgrading the stock, another $100 on a timney trigger - and you're at $500. That leaves a pretty penny for a decent scope if your price range is $1300.

Now you've got a pretty solid rifle, a handful of spare parts "in case of", and a halfway decent scope (if you don't go crazy with it) for less than the cost of some bare-bones rifles...

                  AR10 would get my vote....

Same basic feel to the gun, but a longer range..

                    I suggest buying ammo.

The only thing you absolutely need to hit a target over 400+ yards with an AR15 is ammo. Doesn't really matter which kind as long as it's 223/5.56, it'll all pretty much hit a target at 400+.

                      I'd get MUCH bigger targets.

Heavy barrelled Remington 700 in .308 win plus a decent scope and a single stage reloading press.

I would continue to shoot at the longer distances with the same rifle. If it's "NO PROBLEM", then extend your range. 500 meters isn't a stretch for 5.56 like some will have you believe.
