I do agree with the general point of OP's post though. While I find the "Rules of a Gunfight" entertaining, I do think, as I heard someone say a while ago, the best self defense tool you can own is a good pair of Nike's.

Biggest thing there is to avoid the fight.

Myself, I will do ANYTHING to avoid a fight because I know that when a fight starts I always go into my `I will f***ing win/survive this tonight` mode and that's not cool because it's too easy to send someone to the hospital and later face criminal or civil charges.

And at the end of the day, thats just going to cost me more money.

I can't imagine a scenario in which there'd be like a 1 on 1 shootout in the street. Gunfights I can think of are: 1) in the home, or 2) protecting your property, like the Korean shop owners in LA.

Besides that, it's not really a gun fight, it's just who gets the drop on someone with a gun first.

^ theres the parking lot gun fights. I've seen two and seen a guy come to class to "re-hone" his skills after firing 10 rounds at 3-5 yards missing his target while his target shot back the same amount missing all too..

Couple of things learned about cover, at least for small arms fire - wood is better than drywall, bricks are better than wood and rocks are better than bricks. Also behind the car's engine is better than behind a car's door.

OK right, I suppose I was speaking to the majority of law-abiding gun owners who aren't involved in anything questionable. I can't speak to gang war meetups in the alley behind the chuck-e-cheese, or when a buster rides up slow in his low rider on your homies and your forced to blast back to check his rep.

Don't draw it unless you're ready to use it. A robbery, they want one thing - your stuff. Never surrender a weapon, obviously, but if they just want your wallet, handing it over is the path of least resistance. Drawing a weapon really is going to escalate matters. Odds are they'll run away.

Your day is about to get exponentially worse. I know enough to tell you that. I can see your original point about the wallet. ie, you have to shoot someone and deal with all the damn fallout even if justified and all that. There is the time and court cost issue to worry about as well.


But I've come to think that if you give a criminal what they want, that crime will pay. And crime isn't supposed to pay.

Of course there are tons of ways to prevent from being a victim; like GTFO, being aware of your surroundings, and walking upright with the proper confident posture so as to not look like a victim.

Santa Monica,SoCal about three years ago.A plumber and his helper go to thedrive thru of a fast food resturant. As the plumber is ordering,A man appearing to be homeless aproches the helper on the passenger side of the van and demands money.The helper tells the guy toget lost. the homeless man then pulls out a screw driver and starts to stab the passenger in the upper shoulder and forearm,While this is happening the driver (the plumber) pulls out a 357. from under the seat and plants two slugs center mass into the transient.....NOW THATS "CONFLICT RESOLUTION".

I know, it hurts but the other option sucks. Running away is a safer option at that point.
