How to determine Pre or Post Lock S&W?

I have a wonderful S&W 586 (no dash) which is HARD CHROMED and action tuned I am considering selling it. But how do I know if it is Pre or Post Lock? And what is a fair price considering < 1k rounds. Thanks

I agree. The hardchrome and action job unfortunately devalues the gun.

Ouch! that hurts to hear. Hard-chroming wasn't cheap. Is that a fact or an opinion?

well, i certainly wouldnt pay MORE for a gun that has been hard chromed. But its not a bad thing.

who was it tuned by? unfortunately, I wouldnt expect it to gain much value because of these things.

however, I don't really think it devalues the gun though.

Edit: and to answer your question. Its my opinion. Nothing can be fact because you might find some guy that HAS to have it.

Thank you very much for you opinion. I believe it was done by Charlie Grant. My father had it done before giving it to me, I'd have to ask him to be sure. I'll check out that forum. Thanks.

Even though its an opinion it is based pretty much in fact. Refinishing from the original factory finish is a huge hit to resale value in all firearms. A factory refinish isn't quite the same hit, but it can still be substantial. S&W actually marks on the side of the grip frame when they do a factory refinish so, in that case, there is no question.

Especially with older and collectible firearms, ones with a back story that weren't safe queens, some honest wear and a bit of patina is expected and appreciated. Lots of guys have refinished guns to make them look pretty again, and destroyed a lot of market value.
