    To confront or not...

My gf and I were talking about break ins last night because we left her appartment yest afternoon w her shotgun to go shooting. After we left her downstairs neighbor was robbed and they waited for everyone in the block to leave. They've obviously been staking the places out cause there was a car break in last week as well and her neighbor accross the way said he saw someone on her balcony and asked him if he was looking for something and the guy took off. So she's going to keep her gun at her cousins safe and said at first I felt like I would be safer with it but then I was thinking id probably jjust get shot if I confronted someone breaking in on me. I couldn't believe she said that. I said what r u going to do. Call the cops after he's finished ransacking your place and potentially hurting you. She said well if I pulled a gun on him he'd probably get agitated and shoot me. I just said and your comfortable giving up your means of self defense and trusting that he doesn't get pissed and shoot you or rape you even without a gun. I said if it was me and I heard someone. Id yell I'm armed and you better make yourself known or get out and I called the police. Id hide in a safe spot till police arrived. she said I should ask a cop what they would do. I know the responses will be biased but I'm worrying about her. Just wondering what you all think

Yup. If your neighborhood is getting staked, chances are it's another target for a future robbery. I would consider moving.

        Move out and

...but seriously, if she's going to have a gun in the house, then she needs to be mentally prepared to shoot someone with it. It sounds like she is no prepared to do that. I would take her shooting a few more times and get her comfortable with the shotgun and hope for the best. Otherwise, she's going to be another victim. The police have absolutely no responsibility to protect her, she will have to do it herself.

Avoid confrontation, if possible. Stay armed while waiting for help in a safe place. If the BG enters your 'safe area', the confrontation is happening whether you like it or not.
The question is 'do you want to have a chance to neutrailize the threat before he harms you?'.
An SG in an apartment could be a little awkward. You probably do not have much room to move around. In this case, an HG might be a better choice.
This said, hide behind the bed with the SG. If BG enters your line of fire, advise you are armed and will shoot. If he retreats, no need to fire. If he advances, make gun go bang.
Your GF needs to have secure storage for the SG. She also needs to determine quick access to it. Finally, she needs to be 110% familiar with it. If she cannot fire it during a period of high stress, it is useless.

It's my understanding that you don't pull a gun on something you don't intend to destroy or kill, so someone breaking in can get agitated about it all they want while they're lying on the ground either dead or dying and you're on the phone telling the cops they should bring an ambulance with them.

I think Redford is spot on it though.

It's her decision not yours. When you are married to her then you have a say. If not Romeo, no need to ruffle her feathers. It is one thing to ask and another to impose.

I think a little bit of brain washing is called for here.
The hardest part in getting someone comfortable with killing another human being is in getting them used to shooting at the human form. I can only use my own experiences as an example but when I have engaged people all I ever saw was a target, I only ever recognized it as human after business was done. The key is dehumanizing people in her eyes and making them legitimate targets. The way I do it with my wife is through training. First off only use silhouette targets. When your shooting at them train her to aim center mass and familiarize her with kill zones and the idea of shooting center mass. Go over basic human anatomy and shot placement. You don't have to do too much but every time she makes a good clean kill shot tell her so and congratulate her, make kill shots a goal that she tries to achieve. Basically slowly over time do everything in your power to change her thinking of people into targets. It'll make it easier on her to do what must be done when the time comes.

Every time my wife and I go to the range we talk about this stuff. I also run her through drills. Set up a bunch of different targets, labeling with numbers or letters, and set up a creative course of fire. You call targets or methods of engagement and she engages, starting from a low ready position. Train her like you would any other soldier and she will respond accordingly.

                  Excellent advice C.W.

On the other hand, "It's her decision not yours. When you are married to her then you have a say."

I guess besides the wife, the parents, aunts , uncles, best buddies, brothers , sisters, are all dead meat. Just like sheep!

to a certain extent, yes. One's personal safety depends on one's own decisions.

You can only do so much.

But according to the quote which I quoted, besides the wife you don't do didley squat!

I believe the context was the situation with the girlfriend. I don't think the rest of the family was ever discussed.

What I got from that quote was if you are married then you share the same household and can do something about it. If not then you can only do so much to try to convince others.
All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing

Here's what I'd do in your case if faced w/ home invasion:
Follow your gf's advice and hide in somewhere safe, call the cops, take your gun w/ you, shoot the intruder when he comes to you. Remember to positively ID the person you're shooting.

Here's what I'd do in your current situation:
Find another/safer place to live where this issue won't be on the top of m mind.
