give YOUR report on ruger mini 30

So does anyone here have one ? What are YOUR opinions on it and what are YOUR results on accuracy and reliability and dependability and so forth.

It seems like most of what I read is people commenting on the gun when they dont even have one.

I had one back in 2004. I sighted it in at 25 yards, shot great! I then moved out to 100 yards thinking I would be able to ht paper. I was right. I can hit paper. I had a nikon monarch on it....I shot 300 rounds trying to sight it in after a 100 round break in....best group I got was 12 moa. I sold it quick. I checked bolts and screws on the stock and scope... I guess I got a lemon. Some people love the thing though. In 2008 I saw a guy's group at 100 yards... It was about 16", I ask if it was iron or scope he said scope.. I asked what gun, he said mini30....
I'm not knocking on it because I love how they look but it just w went accurate enough for my taste. I heard ruger upper on their mini's so if I shoot one NIB from someone and it's accurate I wouldn't mind buying another one...as long as it's accurate, by that I mean at least 3moa.

you also notice the guy didn't post what ammo was being used. My guess is cheap corrosive combloc surplus. It's hard finding match ammo in x39, yet that is what is used for most .223 rounds where people compare group sizes.

That said, there are a number of design and manufacturing issues that can come up with the Mini-30... frequently, they are not all that bad but occasionally one turns up where everything that could go wrong, did. I believe they have corrected many/most of these with the new series on new milling equipment that was begun two years ago. Just reporting what I have been able to learn, as I have never owned one myself.

Fine I will put ammo in yhe picture, it was wolf classics and wolf fp in 123gr.

The same ammo shoots 3" with my wifes sks with a RDS. I'm sure if the mini is bad it'll open at most 6"...but hey, the OP asked for a review of MY mini30 which I gave him.

Replace the spring that goes with the firing pin to a stronger spring, or you won't be able to shoot cheap milsurp ammo consistantly. The primers on milsurp ammo are a little thicker than domestic ammo, which is what Ruger is designed to shoot. I can't remember the name of the spring though. Other than that, it's a great little gun to shoot coyotes with. Don't expect to win any shoot'n matches with it.

I think one of the issues with these is that the bores are .308" while most x39 ammo is .311"-.312".

                  I have 2, a stainless & a blued, both are "old style."
Both shoot great. Just put one of those new Redfield scopes on the stainless, was getting 1-1/2 - 2" "groups" @ 50yds. (10rd. groups) with Lapua. I don't generally shoot them more than 100 yds. mostly 40- 50 yd. Tin Can plinking / launching oil bottles into outer space.

I just put an Aimpoint 9000 with 30mm ruger rings on blue. Havent sighted it in / shot it yet with the RDS but the flip up peep has amazingly always been right on even missing a screw. Hopefully the Aimpoint will stay on. The biggest problems I've ever had with them is everything coming loose even with loctite. The side mounts suck, I've tried 3 kinds. All come loose & move no matter what.

I used to have problems with Wolf Military classic, Got this,

                  fixed problem.

It's kind of a pain getting the trigger assy back together but worth it to shoot the cheap stuff.

I got a bunch of USA Magazines when CDNN had them for $7.99. All of them have always fed no problem. The John Masen's Suck (for me anyway.)

So you guys think that new spring makes that much a difference on the cheap ammo ?

                      I'm convinced so far.
Older Russian surplus would fail to fire (Dimple primer but not fire) about 1 out of 10, newer Wolf Military Classic roughly 3 out of 10.
After putting in the spring in I haven't had any failures. I've only been out twice with the new spring but last time out fired 200 rds. no problem.
That was with my stainless, haven't tried out blue with the spring yet.

Mine was shooting all over paper target at 100yds with Wolf ammo, ended up making a Barrel (.310 bore), Modifying Trigger (3.5lb) and bedding in new stock. The new barrel is .750od 16" length (w/ new Gas Block), shoots better now. The only reason I keep it is due to all the Mags I have for it.
