What next...

Hello All:

I have just recently purchased my first gun (a shotgun) for home defense (not 100% true, I did own a 22 in my teens). I really like shooting my shotgun and I have become addicted. I have considered a whole bunch of other guns, but I really don't know what to get next. Anyone have any suggestions? Here is my current list

SU-16CA
M1A
M1 Carbine (auto ordnance version)
M1 Garand (damn my thumb!)
SIG P226 or P229 or ??? (need to get my Handgun Safety Certificate)
California Legal FAL (IMBEL http://www.entreprise.com/Fal/CA_imb.htm )

You got 4 of my favorites on your list: SU-16, FAL and the SIGs.

Go get your HSC. I would (and do) focus on handguns right now. Given the 1 handgun per month rule (unless you have a C&R & COE) and the loaded chamber law for new approved handguns coming up next year and the mag disconnect law the year after, I'm worried about not being able to get something I want new in a few years time. Plus they're cheaper to feed

I haven't heard of any upcoming laws that will restrict long guns, so those should be good.

Nice speakers, I can already tell I cant have a set.

BTW, If your buying a handgun bring a buddy (wont let you shoot alone) and hit Target Masters or another range that rents handguns. Ive seen guys stuck on HK and walk out 2 hours later with a receipt for a XD.

Rentals are like 7 bucks and if you can afford to rent a bunch of dif stuff you can compare back to back. (BTW I wouldnt touch the USP line but thats me).

OK, now serious: I own a USP, and love it. I know several other people who love them. I know people who hate them. I know people who would never shoot anything other than a 1911. And I've met SIG afficionados. And folks who swear by Glocks (but those must be demented). The next centerfire handgun I will buy will probably be a Sig P226 - just don't know yet whether it's going to be the regular, Sport, X5, or what else.

And if you didn't notice, the comment about Glocks above was also tongue-in-cheek. The really important things: Handguns are a really personal thing; go to the range (if you bring your shotgun, they'll probably let you rent them even if you are by yourself), and try them all out. But one warning: Just because one gun doesn't shoot well for you at the range, don't condemn the whole brand or model. For example, the first time I rented a Sig P220, I couldn't hit the barn door from inside with it. It also sounded funny, and all the pieces seemed to be loose. A very experienced shooter friend who was with me couldn't hit accurately with it either - that pistol was just ruined. I've since rented Sig P220s at Reeds, and even though I'm by no means a good shot with them yet, they are fine pistols.

Couldnt have said it better myself! Im a 1911 guy and cant hit anything with a USP .40 or .45

Good idea to bring your room broom so they dont think your going to do somthing dumb with the handgun your renting.
Oh, I own a P7M8 so Im not anti HK.

I went to Turners today on my motorcycle (nice ride out of the desert) and looked at the SU-16 and the SIG P226. These are two vastly different weapons, but these are the two I have narrowed it down to. Maybe I will just get both

You have no idea, do you? Once you get a Sig (if you like it that is) than you will need just about all of them.

Let the addiction begin! You really can't go wrong with any of the above guns, but if I were you, I'd get the Sig P226 and/or SU-16CA. Both guns are really fun and accurate to shoot. I've put well over 1000 rounds through my SU-16CA without any problems - I'm convinced it's one of the best Kali-legal rifles. As for the Sig, a buddy of mine recently let me try out his new Sig P226, and I couldn't believe how much more accurate it is than my Glock.

I'm actually debating now whether to get a Sig P226 or a DSA FAL. Because of my addiction, will probably end up getting both.
