    45LC/410

I asked this in another thread but cant seem to find it anymore. But I am curious as to what the ramifications are of owning a contender barrel in 45colt/410 or say an American Derringer in 45Colt/410. I know there must be some of these laying around in California that go back to the 70's. I used to have the contender, long since gone but I know there must be some out there.

i understand that now it is a felony, however that was not the case in the 70's as my complete contender was purchased locally. what i am wondering is if this is another retroactive gun law where people that owned them before had to register them or turn them in. Just about any single shot 45 Long Colt will accept 410 shells

there is no "grandfather exemption" to the law. Nothing retroactive about the law, they aren't punishing possession that happed before the law went into effect, just that that occurs now.

not neccessarily true. Only those .45LC chambers that have been cut deep enough to accept a .410 shell, usually considered a hybrid chamber. But in any case, if the barrel is less than 18" and it can chamber a .410 shell, it is considered an SBS in CA.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

If it is a Contender that can fitt other barrels, I would buy a caliber 44mag, 357, 223, 17HMR any legal barrel suitable for your frame. Sometimes Contendors came with a set of barrels. Sell .410 shot shell accepting at gun show to a AZ or NZ gun dealer {carry barrel only - not complete gun or you could be arrested}. Worst case drill hole through the chamber wall and smash with hammer, srew bolt into chamber opening then weld bolt.

Up untill recenrly many out of state gun suppliers did not care what they shipped to CA. The laws of CA were they CAdealer and purchasers problem - well no more.

A CA FFL had a derringer that shot 45Long Colt and would accept .410shotshells shipped to him. He got to a AZ gunshow and sold as ASAP as he could, when he realized his mistake.

If you purchase in 1970 cool but still (my personal opinion) illegal (my personal opinion). If a .410 shot shell can be chambered and fired, (my personal opinion) you do not want to own it (my personal opinion).

            (edit - my baude)
