    Thread a Mossberg 500 barrell?

I would like to get my Mossberg 500 18.5" Cylinder bore barrel threaded to accept chokes. Is there enough meat to thread there and can anyone recommend a good smith to do the work?

shouldn't be an issue. AFAIK, there is enough meat for a standard diameter choke to be installed. IF not, they make thin-wall choke tubes for barrels that are on the small side.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

You'll definitely have enough meat, and a good smith will carefully measure the existing bore before he starts cutting metal. I'm unable to give you a reference in CA, Briley in Houston does nice work, you'd only need to send the barrel.

Call Dave's Metal Works in Covina, 626-859-0299. He's done several Remington barrels for me, great gunsmith.

If you come back to this thread: Can you explain your reasoning for a choke on an 18.5' barrel? I am trying to learn.

Still checking the thread, 2 reasons actually, if cheaper than a new turkey barrel, I want to be able to use turkey or coyote chokes.

But some of its for fun to put a HD choke like the Remingtons have. Just looks.

I had my 20" Mossberg done by Carlson's.

Thanks for the response. I shoot slugs in a smooth bore. Used to be 28" until I cut off the last 1.5" off the barrel. My buddies tell me I ruined the barrel. My reason: I cut open a slug and let it slide in the barrel, last part no go. This Remington barrel has (had) a factory choke, a taper. Barrel on my Mossy 500 (18") it slipped right through, plenty of play. I thought: this will slow it down, (I am told this is wrong) the factory taper will actually increase velocity. What do you think? Shoots fine, can't really tell any difference in the 18" or the 24". Never shoot skeet. Only Slug or 00. Ouch on the shoulder.
