A vintage military rocket aimed at the Hemet police station was found Thursday night one block away on the roof of a nearby market, Hemet police said today. Police said the rocket is suspected to have caused a fire in the market's parking lot.
Police said someone was aiming the rocket at the police station from the market's roof when it appeared to malfunction before being fired.
The M29A2 rocket was found on the roof of the Los Altos Market shortly after 10 p.m. on Carmalita Street, Hemet Lt. Duane Wisehart said. Detectives are investigating whether the rocket was connected to what started the fire that burned several wooden pallets behind the market.
Hemet police and firefighters were checking the roof of the market Thursday night for fire damage when they recognized a suspicious device, Wisehart said.
