Home Invasion This Morning - in MY home!

We are in the middle of a remodel and things are kind of in disarray and the garage is full of my contractor's tools. Our daughter is also home for awhile until she starts grad school in fall. So, at 4AM the dog kind of stirs and I heard some noise thinking not too much of it because I figured it was my daughter getting water or something. But, then I heard another strange noise and a car engine. Still thinking it was probably my daughter I did not retrieve a firearm first - a mistake but as it turns out probably a good one.

I went out the hallway and turn into the family room turning on the canned overhead lights very low so as not to ruin my night vision since I wanted to look out in the street since about a month ago my neighbor's car was broken into. I spent about 30-40 seconds looking out the living room window and entered from the other side of the hallway to go back to bed, turning to hit the wall switch for the overheads I had turned on earlier. When I turned there was a skin headed m-f'er crouched about 30 feet away trying to hide behind a kitchen counter. I told him I was armed and he had better get out of the house and he moved towards me, picked up a chair from the breakfast room, held it over his head and hucked it at me. As soon as it was in the air I was down the hall to go get a weapon and to have the wife call 911. The chair busted to **** on the hallway jamb and busted the hell out of a new piece of furniture I did not like anyway. I got my 9mm turned on the laser and took up a defensive position in the hallway until the cops arrived.

The guy ran but by the time he navigated the way out of the neighborhood the cops stopped he and his buddy in their car about two miles down the road. One guy fled on foot.

The bastard in my home woke me because he was trying to pry the new LCD LED TV I had just put up and he left his taser on the fireplace mantle. He could not get it loose because it is in a soffet with only about 1/2 inch of clearance. I think his buddy ran when I came out of the bedroom but I think this guy wanted to get at his taser but to do so he would have to come close to me and he was not sure if I was armed at that point and I don't think he wanted to tangle if he did not have his taser. Not that I wanted to tangle without being armed, though.

Anyway, MacBook, wallets, phones, credit cards, purse, watch, etc., stolen, but the tools were recovered and these fine citizens will be a guest of the state for quite some time, I suspect.

Turns out this guy was lucky I was under the assumption my daughter was making noise because otherwise I would have been armed at the outset and if he hucked the chair I may have answered by firing, being under attack and not sure how many others might be in the house. Can't be sure, of course, but that may have been the case. I am glad it did not work out that way since that would have been a whole different type of hassle if I did shoot the bastard.

Anyway, have not had the adrenalin pumping that hard for quite a few years, I think. And, this could have turned out a thousand ways differntly, none good.

Wow, glad it turned out well for you. Yep, if you had shot the guy, even though a perfectly good shoot, you probably wouldn't be here telling us this story. How did the other stuff end up missing if they caught them?

Man cheers and God Bless you and the family. In the end I'm glad that it all worked out the way it did and you did not have to take a life. I know that in my mind it would have been justifiable but the LAW sometimes makes me wonder, with him not having a "firearm." I can jokingly say that in Texas the police would have probably brought his *** back to you and ask that you took your God given right to defend yourself upon him.

so how did the tools get recovered but not the personal items? did the 1 guy who got away carry that with him or something?

glad it went as well as it did but next time, don't assume? cause it might have turned worse.

When teh one unit on its way saw the car running away it pursued and stopped them. Once guy got out of the car and fled over a wall on foot with a laptop bag which I assume was the computer and wallets and phones, etc. since the big stuff was in the car. Since the deputy was alone at that time he did not want to let the two in the car go. They eventually set up a perimeter but the thrid guy got away.

Hey, I hear you. Usually I open my nightstand gun vault before turning in, but I got lazy and lazy again when going to check out the house figuring it was just my daughter. I thought about getting my gun first, but passed. I will not make that mistake again.

The part that really has me pissed at myself was the fact that when I went to the living room to look out the window I had my back exposed for quite sometime and had this guy desired he probably could have taken me down. So, another lesson learned - be precise in my house search next time taking proper defensive positions. And, make sure I turn on the alarm no matter the hassle.

i'm thinking it could be inside job by a contractor or one of the workers that the contractor has with him.

or they really did their scouting and saw during the day all the remodeling work and assumed there was no one living at home?

No, we have known the contractor for 20 years - old family friend and he is not from the area. I suspect it is the one of the gardeners all around the development reporting targets to their buddies. I think that is what we will find out.

Wow, it sucks to be a victim of home invasion. My family was once a victim of home invasion. About 15k worth of stuff was stolen and the guys were never caught. While the police was investigating they didn't seem very interested in solving the crime.

I also make the mistake of thinking it's just someone that got up to get a drink or bathroom. I will be more alert from now on.
