We are in the middle of a remodel and things are kind of in disarray and the garage is full of my contractor's tools. Our daughter is also home for awhile until she starts grad school in fall. So, at 4AM the dog kind of stirs and I heard some noise thinking not too much of it because I figured it was my daughter getting water or something. But, then I heard another strange noise and a car engine. Still thinking it was probably my daughter I did not retrieve a firearm first - a mistake but as it turns out probably a good one.
I went out the hallway and turn into the family room turning on the canned overhead lights very low so as not to ruin my night vision since I wanted to look out in the street since about a month ago my neighbor's car was broken into. I spent about 30-40 seconds looking out the living room window and entered from the other side of the hallway to go back to bed, turning to hit the wall switch for the overheads I had turned on earlier. When I turned there was a skin headed m-f'er crouched about 30 feet away trying to hide behind a kitchen counter. I told him I was armed and he had better get out of the house and he moved towards me, picked up a chair from the breakfast room, held it over his head and hucked it at me. As soon as it was in the air I was down the hall to go get a weapon and to have the wife call 911. The chair busted to **** on the hallway jamb and busted the hell out of a new piece of furniture I did not like anyway. I got my 9mm turned on the laser and took up a defensive position in the hallway until the cops arrived.
The guy ran but by the time he navigated the way out of the neighborhood the cops stopped he and his buddy in their car about two miles down the road. One guy fled on foot.
The bastard in my home woke me because he was trying to pry the new LCD LED TV I had just put up and he left his taser on the fireplace mantle. He could not get it loose because it is in a soffet with only about 1/2 inch of clearance. I think his buddy ran when I came out of the bedroom but I think this guy wanted to get at his taser but to do so he would have to come close to me and he was not sure if I was armed at that point and I don't think he wanted to tangle if he did not have his taser. Not that I wanted to tangle without being armed, though.
Anyway, MacBook, wallets, phones, credit cards, purse, watch, etc., stolen, but the tools were recovered and these fine citizens will be a guest of the state for quite some time, I suspect.
Turns out this guy was lucky I was under the assumption my daughter was making noise because otherwise I would have been armed at the outset and if he hucked the chair I may have answered by firing, being under attack and not sure how many others might be in the house. Can't be sure, of course, but that may have been the case. I am glad it did not work out that way since that would have been a whole different type of hassle if I did shoot the bastard.
Anyway, have not had the adrenalin pumping that hard for quite a few years, I think. And, this could have turned out a thousand ways differntly, none good.
