    define protruding conspicuously

    Hey everyone, a noob with a Q

I am attending the academy starting in the fall, I currently own a springfield XD 40 in the 4 inch model, I think because I'm a south paw, the accuracy is only so so. I was wondering if it would be CA legal to put a 5 inch barrel in it as that would be far cheaper than a new side arm.

Also I'm looking into new sights (obviously!) for POA POI versus their factory 4' low, my group size when cold is my issue currently
btw waiting for the ruling on Concealed carry!

The only thing that 'protruding conspicuously' is associated with is AW laws concerning rifles with pistol grips protruding conspicuously below the action.

As long as the barrel isn't threaded you can install it no matter how conspicuously it protrudes. You don't need a 5" barrel to get combat accuracy, though (and the real benefit of longer barreled handguns is increased sight radius, which you won't have without a whole new slide).

Spend the money on ammo and instruction and I bet your accuracy magically gets better without modifying the gun at all.

being a southpaw has nothing to do with accuracy...it's all about trigger control

it also helps if you're optimizing the grip you are using. getting instruction is the key to good shooting

where are you attending an academy?

A: Academy at CSM starting September 8th.

By accuracy I suppose precision is a better word... I shoot right with pistols, everything from a 500 S&W, or a 44 Alaskan to my little 40, but with a rifle, I can drive nails.

Agreed definitely that I need more instruction, which will be happening at the academy, but I want to place in the top 5 of my class, hence my desire to accurize my pistol

In all likelihood the instructors at your academy would not approve of that weapon with the barrel protruding from the slide for uniformed duty use anyway. So keep it stock.

You mean to be top 5 in shooting or overall?

Shooting is a small part of your class grade. The learning domains (LDs) are the largest part. Even your PT score is worth more than firearms.

A classmate of mine never had shot a pistol before the academy and was one of the worst shots in the class. He graduated #1 and is now on his depts SWAT team.

You are trigger slapping (anticipating recoil) and are probably using ineffective grip technique. There is another thread that has videos on how to hold a pistol. Great place to start. Also, when sighting on the handgun are you shooting both eyes open or one eye closed?

Before you accurize the pistol, accurize the shooter you must.

                        ^^^ This ^^^ + 1,000.

And if you are going to the academy one of the central themes of the course is continual improvement over the period of instruction. The academy instructors will work with you to identify any grip or trigger control issues and if you shoot as well with other handguns as you say you do, your scores will likely improve over the period of instruction. The instructors are used to working with experienced shooters, noobs that have never fired a gun before, and everything in between.

Firearms is an important part of the academy course, but most of the LDs are weighted far heavier. Do not focus on any one area.
