Stocking ammo - how much until you feel prepared?

If you think this is too much to volunteer I understand and you do not have to reply. But I was wondering how much ammo would you feel you need to have stashed away to feel safe. This is not for target practice, plinking, home defense, or the next desert trip. I mean putting away ammo for anything from Aardvarks to Zombies.

Are your amounts different for rifles, pistols and shotguns? I'm thinking something like this:

    Rifles: 1,000 rounds per caliber
    Pistols: 500 rounds per caliber
    Shotgun: 100 rounds per caliber

How about you? 10,000? 1,000? One magazine and a rosary?

    Let me know!

I think about 1000 rounds and 5 mags per gun is a good buffer. Crap, I need to stock up.

I imagine you're going to get a lot of "never enough" replies here, which is where I stand.

I'm new to the game though, so I'm still working on my stash. As it is, I prefer having significantly more for my AR than my G22 since that's my official SHTF weapon. I think when I get up to 5,000 5.56 and maybe 1,000 - 2,000 or so 0.40, I'll feel pretty okay. You can always leave what you don't need behind, but it's not so easy the other way around, you know?

I buy ammo based on the belief that someday they may enact stricter laws or regulations on ammo...so for me...2500 rds for each caliber I own (except shotgun)

I'm trying to get to 5,000 rounds of .38 special before the internet handgun ammunition sales to California end. I'd say that sounds about right.

1000 rounds of .223 might get you through a couple of firefights. At action matches people routinely shoot 250 rounds a match plus practice. At 21, when you buy by the box, a 100 seems like a lot at $35 a box. At 26, when you buy by the case, a 1000 rounds seems like a ton of ammo for $250 a case. Now at my age, when you reload numbers like 25,000 not longer seem big. Thats only 5 cases of primers. Only 15 pounds of powder. Plus you dont hit the super low group buy rate for bullets until 25k.

I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

50 rounds pistol, 25 rounds buck, 10 slugs, 100 rounds rifle. That's way more ammo than I'll ever rationally need, but better safe than sorry.

Now, if you factor recreational shooting into the picture... I might have a case or two laying about.

Well if you can afford to stock up on the calibers you want to use for SHTF situation then get what you can store without getting the bombsquad on alert. Prep a bug out bag too.
In the "zombie" scenario ammo would be worth more then cash and would be among the most valuable barter items.
In a "get to safety" situation, you would just grab the B.O.B and your long gun of choice and go.
"Shelter in place", I would call over the family, arm them all according to skill set take watches etc etc.

No one is going to get into a 10,000 round firefight... from their house.

With that said, 1K in each caliber is fine.

If you're on foot, ammo gets really heavy.

The fate of the wounded rest in the hands of the ones who apply the first dressing.

One shot, one kill, so I keep enough for about 5 Battalions of zombies
If I'm going to lay down suppressive fire with my beltfed, then I'm understocked.
