    Legal SKS

I am very interested in acquiring an SKS for my military surplus collection. What are the rules in CA? This is what I think is correct - PLEASE correct me if I'm mistaken, Thanks:
    1. 50 year old Russians are C&R and with fixed 10 rd mag and are CA OK. Bayonet OK.
    2. No Chinese are C&R and cannot have the spike bayonet attached (lug OK). They are OK in CA with fixed mag (10 rd) and no bayonet.
    3. A 01 FFL dealer MUST go through the DROS procedure.
    4. A 03 FFL collector can legally (but infrequently), sell from his collection to a non FFL in a face to face transaction (ie: gun show etc) as long as the buyer is legally able to own a firearm (rifle) in CA.
    5. Same goes for a private individual as an 03 FFL as described above.

What's a fair price for a Russian SKS in good shape? $350? Besides looking at the bore, checking for matching numbers and checking the action: what else can a buyer do?
    Thanks in advance gentlemen.

4 and 5 are correct except that there is nothing in the statutes that say such C&R transactions have to be face to face.......they can be done via the mail, UPS, etc.

First california doesn't care about bayonets. Actually chinese sks rifles use to come with the bayonets up until around 1990. Then the federal law changed to where you couldn't install bayonets on chinese rifles but having a chinese rifle with a bayo isn't illegal. It's kind of like our hicap mag law. Possession isn't illegal, just manufacturing and importing is illegal(referring to mags). Now if I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct me. Mark

Thanks Paul0660. Much obliged for your help. And thanks railroader. The deal (and problem) with the Chinese SKS (as I get it) is that BATF can't conclusively date Chinese SKS's (even though lots are +50 years). Thus they can't determine C&R status. So, without C&R, a bayonet on a non-C&R makes it a no-no on a Chinsese SKS (in CA) and OK on a Russian +50 years (C&R). Kind of dumb but I guess that's how it works (?)

Bayonets dont matter at all in CA. Chinese, Russian, C&R, non-C&R, doesnt matter at all. That was only the Federal ban which has since gone away.

That's not how it works. The Federal prohibition on bayonets and bayonet lugs only applies to importation of semi-automatic rifles and to assembly of semi-auto rifles from imported parts.

Chinese SKSs with bayonets were perfectly legal to import into the U.S. up until 1990. There were tens of thousands of them imported with bayonets. After 1990, they had to be imported without the bayonets or bayonet lugs.

There is no California restriction on bayonets or bayonet lugs.

Chinese SKSs with bayonets are perfectly legal to buy, sell, own, shoot and import into California from another State. However, since 1990 it has been illegal to import a Chinese SKS with a bayonet into the U.S. from another country or to build a Chinese SKS with a bayonet from parts that were imported from another country.

Last year I bought a Yugo 59/66(?) at Big 5 for $400. It has a bayonet, grenade launcher sights, and was matching numbers in great(new) shape. The only thing is the grenade launcher muzzle device was removed and a muzzle brake welded on.

Russian SKS are typically in the $450-550 range, depending on condition.
$350 is a good deal on a Russian SKS.
