    Proof Of Residency Question

I asked this question in another thread but no one has answered for a while so i thought id ask it here to hopefully get a response.

I was wondering if i could use a medical bill with my name and address on it for proof of residency, when buying a rifle.

No, it has to be something that connects you to the address such as a bill you pay for the addresses power, cable, phone, etc. But DMV registration will work because the highway patrol needs to know where to arrest you if you run away.

          bump. also i found this

Required paperwork for California Residents with U.S. Citizenship status to purchase a LONGGUN:

Photo Drivers license or photo Identification Card issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles, with current residential address printed on card
If current address does not match ID, Proof of residency is required, per Federal requirements.

if i have a id or drivers license with my address on it then i dont need any other papers right? i only need papers if the address isnt on the id or doesnt match my current address right?

          and what about this

To buy a handgun you do not need a license. All you need is the Handgun Safety Certificate (which they make you pay 25 bucks or so and take a test on firearm safety) and a current (maybe like 1month ago is ok) document stating you live at your current location (like a gas, water, bill, etc.) You also need a CA license and pass the background check. The waiting period is 10 days, not 15 and you cannot purchase a handgun within 30 days of this transfer. For rifles it's different. You do not need a license or need to show proof of residency. You only need your CA id and pass the background check and still wait the 10 days, but there is no 30 day "cool off" period for longguns. For ccw, it depends where you live. This is not a shall issue state, so you either are lucky or not. Also I forgot to mention you do need to show proof of a DOJ certified lock or safe. (well actually only for the lock or lockbox do you need to show a receipt not for the safe)

          I also found this

What is the process for purchasing a firearm in California?
All firearms purchases and transfers, including private party transactions and sales at gun shows, must be made through a licensed dealer under the Dealer Record of Sale (DROS) process. California imposes a 10-day waiting period before a firearm can be released to a buyer or transferee. A person must be at least 18 years of age to purchase a rifle or shotgun. To buy a handgun, a person must be at least 21 years of age, and either 1) possess an HSC plus successfully complete a safety demonstration with the handgun being purchased or 2) qualify for an HSC exemption.

As part of the DROS process, the buyer must present "clear evidence of identity and age" which is defined as a valid, non-expired California Driver's License or Identification Card issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. A military identification accompanied by permanent duty station orders indicating a posting in California is also acceptable.

If the buyer is not a U.S. Citizen, then he or she is required to demonstrate that he or she is legally within the United States by providing to the firearms dealer with documentation that contains his/her Alien Registration Number or I-94 Number.

Purchasers of handguns are also required to provide proof of California residency, such as a utility bill, residential lease, property deed, or government-issued identification (other than a drivers license or other DMV-issued identification).
^this seems to only apply to hand guns not rifles so a ID should be all that is needed.^

That is the way I understand it. Proof is only required for handguns or if your address doesn't match the address on your license. Your FFL might not know this though, mine made me bring proof anyway. They also wouldn't except my CCW but did except a bank statement.

I think your right but I would talk to your FFL just to make sure they don't want to see anything.

Different FFL's accept different forms of POR. +1 on asking what they can and will accept.

thats what my last ffl told me. but then they asked for proof of resident also. I guess they assumed that if i have a license, my car would belong to me as well. but it isnt.
