I see many shotgun shooters have their guns blown up. Be careful when reloading. It is not only double charge, but also degraded powder after a long storage may affect it.

I actually know the person that this happened to.

What happened is he had purchased a Remington O/U (Not sure of the model) and wanted a single barrel for it as the double was too heavy for trap. He had a single barrel made for the gun and was working up a load for Olympic Bunker and double charged it. When it went off it blew through the top of the chamber and cut the top of his forearm and another piece of metal went through his wrist and out of his elbow

From your photos it was the top chamber that blew up. Also from your photo of the rib it looks like this was set up as an unsingle - lower barrel fires only and the top barrel should be plugged. Was this the modified single barrel that blew? If it was it looks like the plug may have come out of the top barrel.

Over charging I can understand, double charging I can't - it just uses too much room in the hull. Besides double charging a shotgun shell is one heck of a lot of powder. It seems there had to be a blockage to cause so much damage.

Everytime I've seen a gun explode reloads were involved. I realize there can be other causes, most of the time however it is faulty reloads that are to blame. I'm just not willing to risk something like this happening to save a few dollars on ammo. My face and hands are worth more than I could ever possibly save.
