I am heading to the fontana area on the weekend of the 28th and I am looking to do some shooting around that area. I am also going fishing in indio that same weekend, so anything in between would be great. I am looking for an outdoor range without a rangemaster (like spenceville).

Is there a rangemaster?^^^^Comment

I recently rode a motorcycle enduro in the Stoddard Wells area just past Bell mountain. Plenty of shotgun shells lying around against the hillsides here and there. I didn't see many single projectile shell casing lying about. I wouldn't shoot pistols or rifles there. The area I'm referring too was 7 miles east in on Stoddard wells road off the 15 towards Barstow.Last edited by Stkx66; 05-13-2010, 2:59 PM.Comment

Shooting
Another option would be to just go to the public shooting range at Lytle Creek. Its in the North Fontana area. $12 for the day. Take the Sierra exit off the 15 freeway and head West. It's 11 miles down on the right.
You can't miss it as the paved road turns to dirt right at that point. It's a ways back there and there's literally nothing on either side of the road for the last 2 miles or so, but keep going.
It'll be pretty busy and you may need to wait awhile for a spot, but I've never waited all that long.
Good range with spots up to 300 yards. They sell targets for a nominal fee and also sell ammunition if you need any.
Here's their website.

I used to live in fontucky off citrus near home depot, so I know exactly where that is. I am only bringing a 9mm usp, plr16, and a mossberg 12. But I kinda wanna find a place where I can rapid fire. I heard of a spot near indio but there weren't exact directions. If all else fails I'll probably end up in fontana. I need a place that will allow me to shoot all three on the same range.Comment

so I went shooting at bell mountain yesterday, what you do is take the 15 out to bell mountain (towards Barstow) take the bell mountain exit and just take a trail up to the base of the mountain, I was there all day shooting .22, .223, 30-30, 12g. and nobody bothered us, we saw a couple of dirt bikers but they just rode past, It would be good to go to the back side of the mountain because if your on the front side I think its a no go for rifles (check the link stkx66 posted) and people on the road can see you, its out of shooting range but if you want to be left completely alone just go to the back side but like I said no one came up to us, the guy I was with has been shooting there forever and he said only once a cop came out to tell them to shoot closer to the mountain, but I still dont know if its totally legal to shoot there so go at your own risk, and you need a 4x4 to get to the mountain or you can park and hike for like a mile or so, oh and there are jack rabbits

The area your describing sounds like your in the "Stoddard Wells OHV" area. That area is "shotgun hunting only". The rifle area of San Bernardino Co in that area starts at "Helendale" and goes east to the 15FWY. It runs north along the 15 to the 40, and then south along the 247 to just below Stoddard Valley, and then east. The area between the 15 and 247 is the "Stoddard Wells OHV" area. You can see that in this BLM map:

Technically, it's illegal to shoot rifles in that area, but some SBSO deputies and BLM Rangers may not be enforcing it when the OHV area is not heavily used.
If you take Hodge Rd west of the 15, you'll be in rifle shooting area. The immediate area close to the 15 where people used to shoot (you can see the antennas on top of the hill) is now private land. But if you go west, past the private area, your good to go.
Basically in San Benardino Co., anyplace north of the 58 (going up 395) and north of "Helendale" (going up 15) is rifle/target shooting area. With the exception of OHV areas, incorporated cities, and Military Bases. And the Mojave National Preserve only allows hunting.John Bishop

Great details, thanks...I think I may check this out. So...when you exit on Bell Mountain....how far to the trail that leads to the mountain? No fences? Just look for the trail and go? Also, do you know if it's legal to spend the night? On the backside? Sounds fairly remote.....
Thanks!

Best to stay north of 58 on 395 and off into the hills before breaking out the handguns and rifles or you might take a chance of having a Bad Day.Comment

We should have the updated official San Bernardino County Shooting Map available towards the end of July. At our commission meeting today we were informed that our "County Counsel" (county lawyers) have finished the legal descriptions of the shooting areas, and the map is scheduled for approving vote by the Board of Supervisors at their June 15th meeting. They may approve it then, or put it off until the following week, since their working on budget matters.
Once the map/shooting ordnance is approved by the board, there is a 30 day period before it becomes law. Once the 30 days is over, we will have the map available online to be printed out free, or you may purchase one for $9.95 from Bass Pro Shop in Rancho Cucamonga.Last edited by 5shot; 05-21-2010, 1:34 PM.John Bishop
