    Is DOJ man or machine?

When we submit those documents (or actually the FFL does) does a person go through each document to check if we have a criminal record or is there some sort of automated process?

Also, are the checks for handguns and long guns identical?

I've not bought anything in many years, but a few years ago, the dealer would make a call and talk to someboyd on the other end and tell that person the info.

I think I remember that my more recent transaction, the dealer just fills out some form and did it online; but I can't remember if that's true. I know they used to always make a call.

Its online. The records check is automatic as far as I know.

There are people on the other end that make the final decision though.

Checks for long guns and handguns are identical as far as the background check goes although for handguns we tell them the make, model, serial number, ect where a long gun is just "x number of longguns"
