Anyone into Competition Shooting sport?

The link you have talks about USPSA, which is an action pistol game. The cheapest setup is a 9mm pistol w/ 5 mags and a holster. (9mm is good as ammo is cheap and you can just use your pockets to carry your mags.)
The cheapest competition shooting sport that I've done is smallbore cowboy silhouette, where all you need is a .22LR (tube, pump, lever), iron sights, and 60 rnds of .22LR ammo. So, if you've got nothing, you can jump in at $300 (or $150 if you buy used).Comment

Nope. That would fall under "action."
Actually, IDPA is probably the single best Action Pistol game to start with due to the lower round counts and limited movement. It is also one of the cheapest to get into (defensive-type handgun, three mags, holster, mag pouch).
After that, USPSA Production or Single Stack are good places to start, although the stage designs/difficulty of shots can be a little daunting to someone new to the sport. My friends and family disavow all knowledge of my existence, let alone my opinions.Comment

seriously i think handgun competition, at least CF, is the cheapest.
1. IDPA and USPSA Production allows you to use a gun you might already have.
2. 3-5 mags...do folks actually not have at least 5?
3. a holster...Uncle Mike's kydex is cheap and fast
4. mag carriers
so assuming you already have a gun, mags, ammo, hearing and eye protection, you should be able to get going for <$100...because the journey is the worthier part...The Shepherd's TaleComment

A "Veteran" -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America," for an amount of "up to, and including his or her life."

thanks...my exposure has been mostly local USPSA stuff. it's good to hear that my Blackhawk Serpa will work for IDPA. i figure for local matches, they won't weigh my 226ST

I can barely afford ammunition. Would love to do a shooting sport but don't have the money required.sigpic

I shoot with a bunch of those guys and what they're doing is USPSA (IPSC)..
USPSA is very, very fun stuff but it does add up depending on your level of commitment.. Match fees typically run $30 bucks plus the cost of ammo (150-200 rounds).
Cost of gear is up to you for the most part. Depending on what type of gun you want to shoot (Single Stack, Revo, Production, Limited, Open) it can be cheap or it can be pricey. For the sake of expense, I shoot a stock G34 in Production division.. Add 6 magazines (1 in the gun, 5 on the belt), a CR speed belt, holster and mag pouches, its not too bad since it's typically a 1 time purchase if you do it right and buy good/recommended gear. The other action sports like IDPA, costs are roughly the same.. Again, gear setup is a typically 1 time purchase so hopefully you dont have to re-buy stuff that adheres to the guidelines..
What gets you is the constant consumption of ammo.. that adds up pretty quick if you practice and shoot matches.. I spend wayyyy more over the period of a year on ammo than any other single budgetary item when it comes to shooting..Aloha snackbar!Comment
