+1 on Irvington Arms in Fremont! Quick, easy, and painless. The guys there are really good people too.

DVGW is in Pleasant Hill and despite some people on the forum saying otherwise, they do the correct $35 for PPT.

I have a perfect Burning Man attendance record: zero.

DVGW = Diablo Valley Gun Works

Despite what FS00008 says, I've personally been charged an illegal amount for ppt there.

All of my friends have been charged an illegal amount also.

              I'd recommend J&R in Livermore.

Joe, when? Ken and the guys haven't charged more than $35 in months. Next time you have a PPT please try them out and PM me if you get overcharged. I think there's a lot of residual hate on for DVGW on the forum that is ill-deserved. Ken can be gruff, but he's a lot better than many FFLs.

This was 13 months ago. I may give them a shot again based on your recommendation. But if I have a negative experience at an FFL I tend to want to bring my business elsewhere. I don't want to support any business who illegally overcharges me.

The guy who helped us was kind of grumpy but he was nice enough to me and the other guy doing the ppt. He ignored the hell out of every other customer who came in though. I remember thinking I'd be mad if I was one of those customers who came in ready to check stuff out or make a purchase and didn't even get a hello for 20 mins. And its not like he didn't see him since the store is tiny.

I agree that DVGW isn't the worst FFL I've been to. At least they did the ppt. The guys at Canyon Sports in martinez only do ppt's for a 2 hour period on one day every week. Their guns are overpriced and the workers are extremely rude and obnoxious. On two separate occasions I've witnessed the workers there yell at and cuss at a customer who did nothing wrong but ask a simple question. I will never go back there.

I'd like to not have to choose the lesser of two evils when I go to a gunstore though. I will be buying guns and accessories for myself and bringing friends to the store to buy guns for themselves. I don't want to potentially turn off a new gun owner by bringing them to gun store filled with ***holes. I also don't want to support any FFL who I know charges an illegal amount.

I've had only excellent experiences at J&R in Livermore though. I've done about 4 ppt's there and bought 2 guns. Their prices are probably one of the lowest in the bay area and the workers are the nicest guys I've ever met at a gunstore. They are regular, friendly people and treat you with respect. They really seem like they enjoy their jobs.

When did they stop charging an illegal amount; do you need to demand it in order to get the correct amount charged; have they refunded the illegal PPT overcharges for previous transfers?

My friend was overcharged when I PPTd a firearm there in December 2008. I was told in no different terms to mind my business, "don't tell [DVGW] how to run an f***ing business" and to "go somewhere else if [I] don't like it"

I previously bought some guns from them, and brought in some parts for gunsmithing.

I have not been back since, and don't plan to.

Other instances of the same issue have been documented here.

What is your relationship to DVGW?

Joe, your concerns are extremely valid. Ken is trying to take steps to appease a lot of the people he's pissed off in the past. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone. I think the fact of the matter is that none of the guys in there really understand retail, you've got to acknowledge every customer that walks in teh store and make an effort to try to get to them as soon as possible and a lot of the time they haven't. Ignoring them for 20 minutes is unacceptable. I appreciate your write up, please do consider them and give them a try if you have the opportunity and don't hesitate to let me know if you have any issues.

Frequent customer/hang out there in between classes at DVC/help out there often. As far as I know, they haven't charged more than $35 in months (~6 months more or less). I guess I started going there often after everyone had these issues and they started to work on their customer service. As far as I know, they have not refunded the illegal PPT fees.

No where yet; still coordinating with the buyer.

If the transaction crosses state lines, then it's not a PPT in the eyes of the State of California. Can't blame them for charging more when they are legally entitled to do it. Heck...$75 is a steal compared to what Bullseye charges.
