    Gun Transfers

Yes I know, use the search button. But here's the question...

My girlfriends grandfather passed away, with no wife. Apparently his daughter (my girlfriends mother) asked if I would like the grandfather's firearm collection. They said mostly long guns but some handguns. He was in Colorado and I believe a friend is holding onto them for now.

If there is no will, I believe the guns become the property of his children (who live in Cali). How can I get them into California and legally transfered to myself?

I believe I would need to do a PPT with my girlfriends mother, but how can she get the guns from Colorado to California? Can she pick them up and do the transfer btw her and myself at a local FFL? Is it possible to get around having an FFL in Colorado ship them to an FFL here? I believe that would cost more money?

Also, is there a limit to the number of firearms allowed in one transfer? They say he has like a 100, but I am not sure how accurate that is or even exactly what firearms they are. Getting a list of the models is the next step for me.
    Thanks for the help.

For inherited* guns, the Feds don't require an FFL for interstate transfer. So, the beneficiaries can just drive over to CO and load up the collection and drive it back. Any other transport mechanism they like would also work, though getting common carriers to deliver guns interstate to non-FFL might be complicated. (Might not - some shippers try to keep up.)

For inherited* long guns transferred interstate, no FFL required. They need do nothing else. Because it's the daughter, that would be an intrafamilial transfer of long guns, and CA doesn't care.

For inherited* handguns transferred interstate, no FFL required. Because it's the daughter, that would be an intrafamilial transfer of handguns. They need to file the OPLAW form - $19 for all of them (1? 20? 1 fee for all the handguns in that transfer) in each transfer (presuming transfer to multiple children). The Roster does not apply.

Once here, regular PPT rules apply. Again, the Roster does not apply to PPT handgun transfers.

*NOTE "Inherited" - it doesn't work this way unless the giver is dead.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

Thank you. That is what I was wanting to hear.

What about having the guns shipped? I thought I read that they could be shipped UPS to the deceased Grandfather's daughter w/o an FFL. Is this true?

UPS should do it - they're one of those 'common carriers'. Some UPS stores, however, don't know that's legal. See the wiki article.

USPS will do the long guns, but only FFLs can use the post office for handguns.
