    assen gunsmithing program

There was a thread a few weeks back asking about this program, and I mentioned that I was going into it as a student and I was asked to give updates.

Well I just finished my second day of school, and it's pretty interesting. Not one of the new students is a local, so we all feel confused together. The first semester is almost entierly dedicated to learning the machine tools, second semester is when we get to work on guns.

Right now I feel like the karate kid in the wax on wax off scene. We have to take a 1" piece of round steel stock, and using only hand files we have to turn it into a cube that is accurate to two thousandths of an inch in accuracy. Teahcer says it's cause almost no new students know how to use files properly, and this teaches you how to do it.

The list of guns we are gonna have by the end of course is rather impressive, especially after you consider that you can use them all as a tax right off cause they are for school. I don't have the list of guns we are supposed to have by the end of the course, but I'll try and update it for you.

    Pulsar,
Thanks for the update. It will be interesting to hear about your accounts as you progress through school. Please do keep us abreast of how it's going.
Oh yea! don't forget to take a picture of your "cube" for us, after you finish it.
    Hang in there "Grasshopper"

      Very Cool.

      Keep us posted.

This is the Susanville Program right?

What's the age range of students in your class?

What sort of salaries do recent graduates command?

Lassen also offers a number of short courses during the summer:

A buddy of mine just finished the 5 day M1 /M1A accurizing course. He said it was excellent.

Not sure what graduating salaries are yet, but I'll try to ask one of the teachers tomarrow. And yeah it's the Susanville program. I'll put up a picture of my cube as soon as I get more batteries for my camera, of course by then I may have turned it into a di (singular of dice).

As far as the average range of students, it varies quite a bit, we have one guy who is 17, another who is over 60, but mostly students are in their 20's and 30's.

And this isn't the whole list, but by the end of the course I should have worked on all these guns, and I have to buy these too.

          Mauser
          Enfield
          Springfield 1903
          10-22
          Any Colt Revolver
          Any bolt action .22
          An S&W K, L, or N frame revolver
          Python Officer Model .357
          Any 1911
          Beretta 92
          Any Glock
4 pump Shotguns of almost any manufacture
Browning A-5 Shotgun and at least one other recoil operated shotgun
          Remington Model 1100 or 11-87

And any personal projects if you can find the time. The mauser, enfield, and 1903 are basically complete rebuild projects, very little is left of the original gun when we are finished with them. I'm already planning to try to get the Enfield to shoot .338 Lapua. Just felt like I needed some gun that shoot's an oddball round.

Great post, thanks for remembering us.

The cube sounds like a challenge. Just like whittling, so easy to know what shape you want, so difficult to get there.
