    "Family-Friendly Range", so please leave...

A friend was shooting his GSG-5 at the Gun Room in Elk Grove a few months back. They told him that "this is a family-friendly range" and to please take his evil-looking gun and leave, refunding his money of course. I know for a fact that my friend does not clown around when shooting, so this was not about following range etiquette.

Shortly after, I was in the store and asked about the GSG and parts. The clerk got a little uppity and said "we don't sell open-platform guns like the GSG".

Okay, WTF. I'm still trying to figure out the "family friendly" thing, as well as "open platform".

Anyone else run into this? Is there something that I am not getting here?

That GSG is freakin scary looking. Not to mention the loudness of the round being fired. Maybe your friend should stop being selfish and think of the children and soccer moms.

ETA: I do not think they allow assault weapons. Even ones that can only assault small, furry creatures.

I dont think the range should adjust to the people I think the people should use their own judgement and go somewhere else if they dont like what is common at a range. GUNS!

Cover it with a tacky table cloth, attach a sippy cup to a rail, and tie a balloon off the end.

Walk in and ask if it's "family friendly" enough now.

Either they'll say, yes, or be so freaked out by you they'll be afraid to say no.

haha, they are notoriously anti-"assault weapon look-a-likes". Mindless FUD I suspect. I avoid the place now.

I suppose that you could call the AR an "open platform" gun because it's so simple to change out the top half.
I don't know if the GSG is the same way, accepting an MP5 top end.
If not, they are just lumping all evil black rifles together and calling them "open platform".

Next time your friend goes to the range, tell them that his guns are powered by apple which is quite the closed platform.

Sounds like they should just have a sign that says: "No black rifle that were seen in action movies", or maybe just "No movie guns".

                Silly.

                    Let them be family-friendly.

Don't give them your family-hating business.

We all know bullets flying out of black colored rifles are more lethal than other rifles.

I believe they (The GunRoom) just recently lifted the ban of shooting GSG's and other AR/22's. There's a post around here somewhere on this just this week.

Now I'm not sure since "Unamused" posted this on 3/20/2010

I went today, okay well 3.19.10 and they allowed it.

I actually bought the GSG because i found out from another cal gunner that gun room allows it now. Im not a huge fan of the gun room but sometimes i just dont feel like going to an outdoor range and mangans range doesnt fit my schedule time wise.

Anyway, i talked to the guy at the range and he said that its a pretty recent change and it was after a long talk with management. I asked about AR conversions and he said as long as its rimfire... but went on to say that it has to be chambered in .22 so i guess that means dedicated uppers? either way GSG's are a definite go... AR-22s arent as clear.

                              Their range/store, their rules.
