I have the Peltor Tactical 7S Electronic Earmuffs. They are expensive ($130), but work incredibly well. You'll never need another pair. They block out noise, but let you hear conversations or range commands which is handy at the public range or if you take a class. If you want quality, they cannot be beat.

They are on sale at Midway right now. Enter the code: 10504110 for another $10 off.

I like the Howard Leight L3's.. they cost around $25 to $30 and they work really well.. If you've got the money, get something better but, if your on a budget, these are great.

The main things that we need to know would be....

            - Do you want muffs or plugs?

            - Where do you plan on shooting the most (indoor or outdoor)? For indoor, definitely muffs but also highly recommended to double up with foam plugs.

            - Do you want standard muffs or electronic muffs? For shooting by yourself, standard muffs are fine. If you want to take a shooting class, want to be able to listen to instruction or other people, look into electronic muffs.

            - What type of gun(s) are you shooting? Some muffs get in the way of a rifle or shotgun stalk. I have to wear plugs when I shoot my shotgun as even my slim Howard Leight muffs still get in the way. My Peltor muffs are way to big to wear with any rifle or shotgun stalk.

For eye protection, any wrap-around glasses work. The wrap-around's will help keep flying brass coming in from the side. I use the Remington T-76 glasses, mainly because they look good and they were cheap (less than $3 each).

Do consider electronic ones if you can. The Howard Leights are great. I got this as a gift a while back and it works well...

I plan on shooting rifles and hanguns.

I don't want the ear muffs to get in the way that is for sure. I tend to tilt my head more than I should.

I only shoot outdoors and always double up when I or someone around me is shooting anything bigger than a .22.

I use Peltor Tac6s and Oakley M-frames. The Peltors are OK but they do get bothersome after a while. If you can afford it, get a pair pf MSA/Sordins with gel earseals.

I have a pair of $25 caldwell electronic muffs, I use 'em indoors without plugs and at an outdoor range I turn them on. For glasses, since I wear prescription glasses and didn't feel like shelling out the cash for the "normal brands" or prescription shooting eyewear(oakley, wiley, etc), I got a pair of cocoons instead, and they work great. They fit over my regular glasses, don't interfere with peripheral vision(any more than my normal glasses) and are tight enough to my face that they're a little better than some wrap-arounds in that regard.

Do you have hair growing out of your ears?

                          no, I'm serious.

I can't use plugs because I'm part werewolf or something and have a preponderance of ear hair. It makes it very uncomfortable for me to use anything but muffs. That's a consideration you should keep in mind.

btw, once you get used to them, muffs aren't that bad...you learn to work around them.

I'm going to invest in a pair of MSA Sordin Supreme Pro-X's for my earpro. Kinda pricey, but I'm 22, and expect these to last a loooong time. If I expense it like how a woman would to justify the cost of buying a new dress, the cost breakdown is like this:

I go shooting once a week. I'll make the assumption that I don't take any training classes. This amounts to 52 instances in one year that I will use the Sordin's. $300/52 = $5.77 per usage. Allocated over the course of 5 years, it would be $1.15 per use. Over the course of 10 years it would be $0.58 per use. To me, that would be a wise investment!
