Traveling to Alaska

I'll be heading up to alaska on my motorcycle next month, and I want to bring my rifle to do some hunting and for some protection while camping.

What is the deal with going through oregon and washington with a rifle? Since I'll be on a motorcycle, it will be fairly obvious what it is.

If there isnt really a good way to take it with me, what would be another way to have my gun in alaska? What is the protocol with shipping a rifle?

I'll call the chp's of those states to see what they say, but I'd like some input from all of you too.

I'm pretty sure you won't be able to bring any firearm into Canada. I looked into this a bit while planning a trip (that never happened) up to Alaska.

I don't remember all it would require, but you should be able to ship a firearm to yourself (at a FFL or residence address) without having to do any transfer paperwork.

Someone who knows more will probably chime in soon, though it's always best to get information from the authorities too.

You can travel through those states no problem. In Canada you will need to fill out a Non-Resident firearms Declaration Form. Cost $25.00. You can get them by calling 1-(800)-731-4000 to get these forms.

I know you specifically talked about rifles. Don't even think about bringing a handgun into Canada. Mandatory five years in prison for doing so!

My buddy went hunting in Alaska went a Black bear came at him from behind he emptied his 44 Mag in him and he just kept coming. He said he climbed a tree to the tip top and he cryed like a little girl while it clawed at his feet. He said " This is how I'm gonna die eaten by a bear" Finally after 1/2 the bear lost interest and went back into the woods. He said he stayed up for another hour just to be sure.

Consider taking the Alaska Marine Highway. This will give you a bit of a break from the ride, and it's absolutely incredible. My family took it when I was about 6 and I still remember it as one of the most memorable trips of my childhood.

Make sure that you pack a bear caliber if you have one... You're going to need to make sure that you can import that rifle into Canada... as there are no roads that lead to AK directly from US soil. It IS possible, a friend of mine moved there and went through the process. In any event, they went through his car with a fine-toothed comb...

IIRC you can take your firearms with you through Canada. They bag them up with some official seal and if it's busted before you get to Alaska you get a trip to the pokie. You could always ship the guns to yourself, perfectly legal.

I'll check into the paperwork I'll need, and if it seems too much, then I'll just ship it to myself. I really would like to have it with me, since I'm going to be camping most of the way.

Remember, you cannot bring any magazines greater than 5 rounds into Canada, although it is possible to transport restricted firearms through there if you get approval. Getting the approval for restricted items can take 6 months however. Its much less hassle to just take the ferry from Washington.

I know this thread has been sleeping for a few months, but i too am driving to Alaska soon and wanted to bring a shotgun with me. I have a 7 round mossberg, would that qualify? Someone mentioned the 5 round mag. issue.

Also, what is involved with mailing a gun to yourself, or FFL? Can I simply break it down and ship it in one box or two? Do i have to fill out special paperwork? Is it illegal to bring ammo through the border?

If you're on a motorcycle, I would take a 16" AR type rifle and break it down. That way it won't be obvious you have a rifle. Or take a Kel-Tec SU-16CA because it's light and folds in half and conceals easily. Either weapon broken down/folded could reside in your backpack and no one would know. And for you doubters, the AR doesn't have to be 5.56, it can be .308 or .50 Beowolf if you want. And the prefered bear round of the Native Americans up in Alaska is the .223.
