Does Barrel Threading Have Any Side Effects?

I know this question might sound kind of dumb, but I'm not an expert in firearms like some of you guys, so bear with me. Next week I pick up my M&P 15-22 and I'm thinking about getting the barrel threaded to put on a flash suppressor. But I'm wondering if threading a barrel has any side effects on accuracy, long-term reliability, etc.

The reason I'm wondering this is because the gunsmith will be shaving off a good portion of the barrel, but then again, like I said I'm no expert.

Barrel threading, done correctly, will have no ill effect on your rifle. Make sure your smith is experienced, and qualified to do the work, and you will be GTG.

Thanks for the reply. I called my local gunsmith today, and do you know what he said?

      "Is that legal in California?"

Lol, what !!! I couldn't believe my ears. After a short conversation he told me that he didn't feel comfortable doing it. What a wuss.

Does anyone know of some reputable online gunsmiths with a short turnaround?

Besides making your gun super awesome? No.
        Send it to Randall (AR15Barrels).

Nice site, thanks. Alot cheaper than I thought it was going to be. Also, how do I know what size to have him thread it for the flash suppressor? For the 15-22 are they pretty much a standard size?

Thanks guys for the responses. I think I'm going with this flash suppressor, and unless I can find someone around my area to do it I'll send it in to AR15 Barrels for the job.

The only down-side to a threaded barrel is, you'll always be on the hunt for cool muzzle devices to accessorize your barrel.

Life can make you do many things, even kiss a man with a runny nose.

Lol, no kidding. I can see how people can spend many more times in accessories than what their rifle is worth. I've already got a barrel thread job planned, flash suppressor, carrying handle (like the M16), rds, and I don't even have the rifle yet.
