    for ammo dealers

I am a man of many hobbies and even more ideas. Just ask my wife . So right now I have this idea to open an ammo store. A place that will sell you handgun ammo when Wally World and Big 5 won't, unless your name is Thugg Lyfe. My question is this.
What does it take to legally sell handgun ammunition in the State of California? I already have a business license and tax ID and all that fun stuff for selling other things.
Thanks in advance for any info.

that is a good question. seems like the harder part is to sell reloaded ammo, but i would think factory ammo would be just the same to sell as any gun related accessories?

I believe this is the case. I don't think there are any special hoops to jump through other then what you local city fire code or licensing may require for storing lots of ammo.

For example, Fremont City required me to keep my ammo locked up as a condition of selling ammo.

I don't think anything major is required.

And yes, re-selling reloaded ammo made by an ammo mfg is a little more involved from a liability stand point (insurance). If you wanted to sell your own re-loaded ammo, then yes, that would require an FFL and associated paperwork/requirements there.

My local box stores only sell rifle ammo now. I'd like to offer local shooters another source for their wants and needs.

I don't think this is a winning business model. Before the ammo purchasing requirements of AB 962 go into effect in 2/2011 you won't be able to compete with Wal-Mart, online vendors, etc. AB 962 might not go into effect as planned due to legal challenges by CGF, and your whole business model would go down the drain. Even if it does go into effect the serious shooters are probably going to circumvent it by buying in bulk out of state or finding friendly out of state sellers to use the 03 FFL + COE exemption.

To answer your question, though, I'm not aware of any requirements other than anyone engaged in the business of selling ammo will have to collect the required information and keep it on file for some amount of time.

Exactly, the big stores seem to have already accepted this as reality.
