+ or - on moly coated bullets

anybody have any opinions on moly coated bullets? i'm talking about moly coated lead bullets for handguns.

i heard if you start using moly coated bullets, your barrel will only shoot moly coated bullets? any truth in that?? i figured i can clean it really good with hopps 9 and i should be good to go if i want to shoot FMJ bullets.

can you shoot moly coated bullets and then shoot FMJ's?

    any opinions will be helpful.

i would be purchasing 147gr moly coated lead bullets and firing them out of my 92FS with a factory barrel.

    Thanks.

Pro: You can often get a decent velocity increase from moly coated bullets.

Con: You need to clean the barrel fairly often (200-300 rounds max) to manage moly "caking", and plain Hoppe's #9 is not good enough (there are various solvent recipes to deal with moly). If your barrel is prone to copper fouling, you'll have to be even more aggressive about the cleaning (100 rounds may be too many).

Your barrel isn't permanently "moly-only" once you shoot moly. But it is a good idea to make a special effort to clean all of the moly out before going back to FMJ.

      I got 400 rounds + through a 9mm w/o cleaning the barrell. I like em!
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

        it depends on the moly
if you use bullets coated with the same process as the GS bullets the moly does not come off on the barrel and you can actually switch from coated to non coated at any time.
if you coat your own then there is quite a process to go through in order to remove the moly from your barrel before switching to non coated bullets.

I like them, cleaning is not bad. I do have a couple of grooves in my 1911 barrel that have some crud in them. It does not seem to effect accuracy though.

More info on the moly cleaning process would be appreciated. If there is something easier/ better than hoppes.

ive fired over 20,000 moly coated Bear Creeks in just the last year alone in all sorts of weights from 115, 125, 135, 147 through my pistols (mostly my glock34)

There's zero issue with moly build up if you're using Bear Creeks or similar type bullets through your handguns. Now I've seen my brother tumble FMJ rifle bullets in moly powder.. This is not the same as the moly coating you find on bear creeks, precision bullets i've seen..

Even so, there should be no issue with switching from FMJ to moly coated and vice versa... You're shooting all this through an inherently inaccurate handgun so unless you care about shooting an extra inch or two at distances 25 yards and beyond, its not really going to effect anything..

Since ur shooting it through a 92fs with standard rifling, you can shoot lead, jacket, moly without cleaning or scrubbing..

For cleaning, I recommend getting a plastic brush and wrapping it with copper mesh.. this scrubs out lead and anything else in your barrel.. It's not for the feint of heart but it hasnt effected "my" accuracy at all.. I can shoot the 100 yard plates all day at Angeles with my pistol without much issue..

Would the same cleaning requirements apply to rifles?

I have some 308 Black Hills HPBTs I have yet to try...

I dont shoot rifles, but from what I've heard/read/skimmed, YES.. youll want to remove the moly coating from your barrel if you're going to switch back to shooting FMJ's..

im pretty noob with rifles, so you might wanna do the due diligence to make sure of the proper procedure..

I use a lot of Bear Creek moly bullets also and I never run into cleaning issues or leading. Not even in my Glock factory barrels. Last month I shot my Ruger Super Blackhawk with 44 spcl Bear creek loads and then went to full power 44 mag FMJ loads in the same shooting session without any problems.
