    Backpacking with a rifle?

Having some dificulties finding a place to wander around for a few days and not get in trouble for bringing my rifle...
Some of the trails nearby I hear gunshots all the time (Big Sur)

Does anybody know the laws for something like that, or some trails for a 4ish day trip that would allow it?

The Trinity Alps and Marble Mountain Wilderness in northern California would allow it. Also supposed to be some good hunting if you hi it up during rifle season.

Same with Plumas National Forrest near Oroville.

I think any national forest and BLM land would allow it.

Search for posts by Mudcamper. He has it dialed in where you can take a gun in the woods, etc.

Once you find a place, to be on the safe side, It would not hurt to contact whichever agency (BLM, National forest LE, etc.) who has jusrisdiction and ask them as well. Get a name and write down the time you called, etc.

I know with some areas, it can be restrictive or obscure (have to unload your gun while crossing certain roads, etc)., so educate yourself as much as possible.

It is also important what you say when contacted by LE if you are. If you have a rifle, they are going to want to assume you are hunting, etc., even if you are not.

Most any BLM, Nat'l Forest or State Forest should be good to go unless posted otherwise.

Yessir! I'm surrounded by Plumas Nat'l but I'm at the east end. Near Reno. If you come up I80 you can get to Plumas or Tahoe Nat'l and you can walk around all day with a rifle of pistol.
I'm in the woods five minutes from my front door in almost any direction and I'm never without a firearm. Not that I've ever felt fear from two legged predators.

Lucky you, Plumas is a 3-3.5 hour drive from Oakland, so I don't go often. When we do, my dad and I like to stomp around the Feather Falls side of the forest.

It's a nice area, but lately I've found myself getting bored with that area. I kind of like densely populated woods where it's cool and moist year-round. The area around Samuel P Taylor park is what comes to mind.
