Reno gun show in April: 1) Worth it? 2) Logistics?

I'm new to shooting. I'm looking for a a good target (non-hunting) rifle. I've heard the Reno gun show coming up is quite an event. While the drive from the Sac area is not that big of a deal, I'm wondering if it's even worth it. I realize that I may not be able to get a great deal, but I'm thinking there may be an interesting selection of rifles that local dealers don't carry (considering the hunting focus most shops have here).

So, is it worth the drive?

And if I do find a gun there, what do *I* need to know about buying a rifle out of state? I realize that the guy selling it may tell me whatever to just close the deal, but I want to make sure that if I buy a fully automatic 50BMG Gatling gun that the paperwork is handled correctly.

Seriously, what are the rules for buying a gun out of state face to face? I understand that on something like gun broker it's mailed to an FFL, etc. How's it work person to person out of CA?

    Thanks!

Go to the Reno show even if you don't buy anything. You will see just about everything you are looking for. Don't have to buy there. Look around and shop.

Ya gotta go Mister, ya just gotta

Its a hoot fondling all that nice smooth new stuff. Lots of things to look at and learn about.

    Support your local gun show.

Any modern firearm crossing state lines must be transferred through an FFL transaction in your home state. That applies to all states, as it's part of the Federal 1968 GCA.

Go to Reno, find a gun you like that's permissable in CA, then get the seller to agree to send it to an FFL here in CA. Good luck with that.

Face-to-face transactions in Nevada are only permissable when both the seller and buyer are residents of Nevada and the seller is not an FFL holder, instead being a simple collector selling one of his/her guns from their private collection. I am unsure of whether this applies to C&Rs. 'Antique' guns not considered to be firearms by the BATFE are uncontrolled. You may buy all the Revolutionary War muskets in Reno that your heart desires.

Federal law doesn't allow face to face, person to person or private party transactions between unlicensed residents of separate states. An out of state resident must purchase from a licensed FFL.

Furthermore, transfers to an out of state resident must comply with the laws of both the buyer's and seller's state of residence. Since California requires that all transfers go through a FFL, the out of state dealer must send the firearm to a dealer in California for DROS and the beginning of your 10 day wait.

The California dealer must charge you DROS fees and can charge you transfer fees and tax. You're screaming deal may be stiffled to a dull roar.

Of course, if you have personal C&R FFL, the rules change.

Uhhh, contrary to what most Angelinos think, not everybody lives down in SoCal. Reno is a 3-5 hour drive from most of NorCal population centers. Phoenix is over 14.

Didn't you get the memo? If you are a DOJ agent with an m4gery you get to shoot up desks.

The show is an eye opening experience for anyone who has never been out of California for a gun show.

I pummeled an old computer case the other day with my CETME, but not indoors like CADOJ "Operators"... Indoors destruction is reserved for Tactical CADOJ Hitman Operators.

Every time the issue of out of state gun shows comes up, I find that the hypotheticals about "well what if I buy such and such full capacity magazines" comes up with it.

                      As a reminder to all:

Do not go to an out of state gun show and purchase full capacity magazines to import back into california.

If you do buy full capacity magazines, disassemble them before you come back into the state, and ONLY buy them if some of their parts are to be used to repair your legally owned full capacity magazines. Remember that the total number of full capacity magazines you have in your possession before and after you go to the show MUST remain the same.

Be cautious of over zealous DOJ agents at the out of state gun shows, specifically the Reno gun shows. They have been known to watch Californians purchase full capacity magazines and have them pulled over and searched/arrested when they enter the state.

If you go to the gun shows, do everything completely legal.

Now that the full capacity magazine schpeal has been said and clarified, do NOT start suggesting illegal behavior in this thread.
