Ready to make the switch! Some advice needed...

Well...it's an addition really. Right now my ammo collection is largely focused on 7.62x39. I've got the obligatory SKS (two actually), the Saiga 7.62x39 (un-converted), and the mini-30 (that I may actually sell). The Tax Man was kind to me this year so I'm ready to start building a stash of NATO. So far, the first thing that I want is an AR-pistol, then I'll add a long gun (this discussion will help me decide which one).

So first things first: .308 or 5.56? And I know I should know this since I'm a Soldier, but just to confirm...if I go 5.56 I'll be able to shoot .223, but not the other way around (at least not without causing excessive wear on the barrel), right?

Things to consider: Price and availability of ammo, price and availability of the subsequent firearms that go with the different rounds, dropping power (I want the zombies to RUE THE DAY ), accuracy, and types of weapons available. The AR-Pistol is a MUST so lets start there.

For long guns, I'm liking the Keltec SU-16 but also like the M1 Garand (and carbine) along with the SOCOM (but they're damn pricey). If I get the AR-pistol I'm not going to be real keen on buying an AR-style long gun so that's not really a big deal (at least not right away).

OK...I know this was a jumble, but hopefully you guys can make some sense out of my ramblings and help me come to a decision.

    Thanks!

.308, 5.56 is nowhere near as fun. Buy surplus, stack it tall and deep. For ultimate zombie take down, build an AR-308. Or if you want cheap, go Saiga .308.

Are there AR pistols in .308?

Unfortunately I know of none. You'd probably have to build one from an 80% lower since the .308 AR lowers are completely different from the AR-15 lowers.

ChuckBooty beat me to it: I was thinking the same thing. AR-10 pistol, 7.62mm NATO, dayum that would be a beast!!!!!!!!! I'm sure someone has done it somewhere, time to bust out the search mojo....

Virgin AR10 lowers would be good to go. Find a friendly out of state FFL who will take a virgin AR10 lower, put a short barreled upper on it, shove a single shot mod into it and have it sent to your local FFL. It can now go through his books as a pistol with a roster exemption.

AR pistols don't need to be marked pistol, do your "regular" pistols have "pistol" stampings on them? People do that so that you don't mix them up and it tell LE it is a pistol, but there is no legal requirement. You can't mistake a 1911 frame for an AR rifle receiver, but you can mistake a AR pistol receiver for an AR rifle receiver and vice versa. Pistols laws are the same for every pistol and rifle laws are the same for rifles.

Shooting 5.56 out of a .223 rifle will do way more damage then just wearing out the barrel. But that doesnt matter, since you are going to buy a SOCOM 16!!!

Go either 556 Chamber or best of both worlds Wylde Chamber.

hmmm...now I think we're on to something. OK...so where the hell do you find a virgin AR-10 lower?

Check out LMT (Lewis Machine)'s .308 system:
WTB: French & Finnish firearms. WTS: raw honey, tumbled .45 ACP brass, stupid cat.
