I'm posting this in hopes of giving a heads up to any other folks like me that might be looking for an FFL to do a PPT.
--> By all means, avoid The Gun Exchange in San Jose. <--
Here's why:
I got a sweet deal on a pistol from a great guy here on Calguns. We hooked up over the phone, and then set a date/time to meet up to do the PPT at the Gun Exchange. This is not a critique of the seller at all, he is a great guy, and I'd buy from him again in a second.
On first entrance, the store is filthy and crowded. More like an indoor yard sale than a gun shop. Not that it matters though, I was just doing a PPT, and after, planned on grabbing a holster or two, and some extra magazines when I did my pick up. Despite the number of people working that day, it seemed to be a total cluster f**k.
The seller and I filled out our paperwork, handed over id's, and did the whole thing that buyers and sellers do all the time. Two different people helped us. The first, seemed to know what he was doing... the second, not so much. So half way through everything, the guy hands us off to someone else, and starts helping other people. Kinda rude, but hey, that's no biggie.
After watching the second guy fight with the computer for over 15 minutes, we finished up everything. There was a hitch though... I'd forgotten my HSC card at work. The guy doing the transfer said to just call him the next day and give him the number from the card so he could start the paperwork. No problem, right? Wrong.
The next day I called up to give them my HSC number. I talked to 3 different people, and finally the 3rd one took down my name, what the gun was, and my HSC number and told me no problems. He said the 10 day wait would take an extra day because it wouldn't start until that day, and not the day we came in. No problem, I'm flexible. Mistake.
Yesterday was supposed to be "that day". I called from work to find out what time I could do the pickup, It took 3 tries. The first two, the fax machine answered, and you could hear someone swearing as they attempted to comprehend this brand new space-age technology. The third time, I got the owner, who didn't give a crap about my question, and handed me off to someone else. I was calling, because I had to drive up to Jackson Arms in SF for a different PPT pickup (which went flawlessly)... an hour drive in the opposite direction, and I needed to know which place to go to first. The guy on the phone didn't seem able to do time math the way most places do it, and said "Just come in tomorrow". No problem, I'm flexible.
So I stayed up until 2am, loading up a bunch of ammo to take to the range with my latest acquisition. (sorry, neither here nor there)
I drive down there at 9:15 this morning, and here's where things go south.
The shop is empty, there's 4 guys in there getting ready for the day. I hand the young kid my paperwork, and my HSC card (because I was told they'd need to zerox it when I did my pickup). As I'm fishing my ID out of my pocket, the guy pulls my paperwork.
He then tells me that they never ran DROS! The paperwork is right there in his hand, and on the back is written my HSC number, so they obviously had the right packet. He then says that I need to get ahold of the seller (who I must say again, is a cool guy), and come back in and do the paperwork again. The last thing he said was that the guy who filled out our paperwork shouldn't have told us we were good to go.
Problem is, EVERYONE that I talked to told me we were good to go every step of the way, including yesterday on the damn phone. I'll have to try and sync schedules with the seller some time next week, and pickup is going to be a major pain because of my job sending me several hours away in the opposite direction. More than likely, my new baby is going to end up sitting in their safe for a few weeks. If they try to charge me for it, I'll have a sh*t attack.
I need to get 6 magazines, 2 holsters, a new scope mount, some powder, a rifle case, and a bunch of other stuff.... all of which will be bought at the Gun Vault in Mountain View in a few hours... a shining example of what a gun store is supposed to be like.
Needless to say, avoid these guys at all costs. It's not that they're trying to rip people off, it 's just that they are clueless and run their shop with the attention to detail of a flea market booth. The chances that they could let something slip through the cracks is very high. Go pretty much anywhere else, you've been warned. All of the negative reviews on Google are right on the money.
