    Question

I am moving to California in a couple of months after I finish my training with the US Army (Engineer officer school and airborne) and I will have two firearms (a IMI Baby Eagle 9mm with two 10 round magazines and an M1 Carbine also with detachable 10 round magazines) from what I've seen on the Calguns wiki these are legal. I just want to make certain both firearms are legal.

I presently possess a concealed carry permit in the state of Florida but I know it doesn't transfer to California. I've heard that I have sixty days to apply for a concealed carry permit in California if I own weapons upon arrival. Is this the case?

Your guns are legal, no problem there.

CA requires that new residents register handguns within 60 of establishing residency, but that isn't any type of carry permit, it just tells the state that you own those handguns. There is a recent thread on this board that indicates this doesn't apply to active duty service members assigned in CA.

As for applying for a CCW. CA is "may issue" and permits are issued at the county/local level. Depending on where you will be living, it can be fairly easy to practically impossible to get a CCW.

The possible good news: I'll assume you are AD and going to NTC. San Bernardino County is one of the places where it is rather easy to get a CCW, but it does take some time.

This is the form you need for the handgun:

You might want to look at picking up a handgun or two that isn't on the state's roster (and thus dealers can't stock them except for LEOs). If you ever decide to sell them while you're here they'll fetch a nice premium over their out of state price.

            ?
the M1 carbine would be legal if it is featureless. So, if you had a standard stock on it, with no attached flashhider, you should be fine. but if you had a paratrooper folding stock or a flashhider on it, then it would be an AW since it has a detachable magazine.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Active duty military not a California resident still need to do that? I don't think so.

To answer everyone's questions in one shotgun blast (pun intended) I am off to NTC on orders from the United States Army.

As for the M1 it's a GI fixed wooden stock. Not crazy about the paratrooper stocks frankly.

And when I transfer to reserve duty in Southern California I intend to reside in the San Diego Country area (about three years from now). Would I need to register for another CCW in San Diego County?

So long as you are on AD at NTC, even if you live off post in Barstow, you will be in San Bernardino County and can apply there. Even though issued by the county/local authorities, the CCW permits are good statewide.

You would have to reapply for a new permit when you move to San Diego County. (Your SB Co. permit may continue until it expires, I don't recall exactly.) In any event, SD Co., is one of those places where it is extremely difficult for a "normal" citizen to get a CCW. However, CCW issuance is one of the key issues in the upcoming election for Sheriff. So hopefully that will be fixed by the time you establish residency in San Diego.
