Anyone ever check ammo in? (airport)

I have a friend down in LA who's working up here in the Bay Area on the weekdays.

He was just at the gun show down in SoCal and picked up a nice bit of .38 super.

I know it's legal to fly with a certain amount of ammo, packed properly. Has anyone ever done this? Any problems rise up?

    Thanks
    B.

Yes, traveled with ammo in checked bags. I weighed on my bathroom scale to make sure it did not exceed the weight limit the airline had in their policy (11 lbs if I recall for United). And checked it. Didn't declare it or anything.

      I think it's 11lbs as well.

No problems then? Well, I'll tell my friend.
      Thanks!

Depending on the airline (other than Southwest) you're probably going to have to pay a fee to check the baggage which might offset any savings from the ammo - darn the airlines. Then again if he's coming from LA he'll probably fly Southwest so this is a moot point .

No problem in checked baggage with a box or three.

Flying Delta I needed a separate locked case and 11 lb limit
I was going to Africa so that might be why I needed the locked case.

No problems with Alaskan Airlines. Brought up a few hundred rounds of 5.45 for my brothers AR. In boxes and packed in an ammo can. Never said a word and they didn't ask.

All of the airlines have the allowable amounts and how it must be packaged and checked available on their websites. Print it out and take it with you when you show up at the airport. It is very easy and you should not have a problem if you follow the rules.

I have flown with ammo and guns in checked bags. Never a problem as long as you declare it. Ammo must be in original box, however.

Well he showed up today with 11lbs of ammo. No problem at all with Southwest.

                    Thanks all.

No it doesn't, they just want it packaged in a way that the rounds don't move around and there's no risk of the primers hitting something.

Yup, my friend had bulk loose rounds, and just packed them in a plastic ammunition holder he had and was gtg.

Never even declared it, just packed it up, stayed under the 11lb limit and was at the range last night having a good time.
