    HSC Renewal

My HSC will expire soon and I wanted to know the renewal process. Will I be contacted, do I need to retake the test or do I pay a fee to renew my HSC? Thanks for any input.

I think you have to retake the text and pay the fee again but I'm not positive.

No notification of renewal. Just go to gunshop when you are buying a handgun and retake the HSC test.

Still have quite sometime before I renew. Very simple process of retaking the test, could do without the $25 fee though.

How were you able to manage that? I have always been under the impression that it was required to retake the test.

There is definitely no notice of renewal. When you go and buy your next handgun, they'll basically look at your HSC and tell you its expired. From that point on, its like you never had one. You pay the fee again and take the test again and they give you a new card. I just went through this all last year in case you were wondering heheh.

I did mine a few months ago since I was buying another handgun and my HCS was expired for a year. Didn't bother to renew it until I was buying another gun and actually needed it. 25 bucks and take the test. That's all there is to it.

There have been a few stories of people issuing new HSC's if you had your expired one without taking the test.

The HSC issuer handbook is online from DOJ, it makes no mention of such a practice being ok.

If your HSC is expired you can not borrow your buddy's handgun and go the range.

Because it's really two things: 1) A hidden tax. 2) Discourager for buying handguns.

"They" do not want you buying guns, and if you do they are going to hit you up for a special tax.

                        Probably true.

This is a simple test designed to 'weed out' the true novice with no idea what he is doing.
After 5 years of actually owning a gun, who would not have improved their knowledge?
The chances that someone passed 5 years ago and failed today is a sign that he is probably suffering from Alzheimers or Dementia and would likely not be considering buying a new gun anyway.
BTW, I just spent $25 to retake the test a couple months ago and I am still annoyed. I previously bought my guns on a Hunter Safety class that I took in the mid 80's for 8 hours. After 8 hours of training, the HSC is a complete joke. I have now paid for it twice; 2004 and 2010.
