    Gun lock

So just got back from the gun shop to do a private party transfer of a handgun that I bought. I was told I would need to buy a lock. I had one of those free gun locks from the police department that I brought w/me. But I was told by the sales person that it wasn't the correct one? So I had to buy one which looks almost identical to the one I brought in. This sound right to anyone?

Yes, sounds right. They are referring to the law that generically requires that you present (or purchase) a new (last 30 days from dated receipt) "approved" lock at time of pick up.

I've heard of some shops accepting a dated receipt from the police department...but that is usually difficult to get.

I've also heard of people purchasing the "approved" lock at a place like WalMart...using the dated receipt at time of pickup (but never opening the lock packaging)...and then returning the lock after pickup in complete.

The law does not require that the lock ever be used.

If you had given it to the seller before entering the shop, you might have had a chance of getting out of the lock purchase. If the buyer wants to provide the lock, there is a "receipt in the last 30 days" issue.

Some dealers won't budge on the purchase issue, some will work with their customers to legally provide a lock.
