What .22 LR to buy?

I'm thinking of buying a new .22

A Ruger 10/22 is high on the list, but I'm also considering bolt actions or small handguns.

Anyone know any good cheap bolt action .22 rifles or California approved small .22 LR pistols (preferably revolvers)?

I had a few 10/22 before I sold them all. they were finicky on ammo and not as accurate as I would like for a rifle, and I wasn't gonna spend 300 on a 200 dollar rifle to make them more accurate.

I have since bought 2 marlin 795s. They are not that sexy and has a protruding magazine, but they are accurate, tolerant of ammo variation and vary cheap.

Marlin also makes a decent 22 bolt rifle for under 200.

how much are they these days? I just feel silly spending more than 350 on a 2 rifle.

Yeah, a bolt sure is a lot more simple and reliable than a blowback semi auto, that's for sure. That's why I'm not that hot on a .22 auto pistol...rather go with a revolver.

I'll see if Big 5 has any good .22 bolts in stock before I hit the gun stores.

look at pawn shops and places with used gun racks... great stuff pops up for under $80 all the time

I don't even know where any pawn shops are.

I'm thinking a cheapie .22 bolt action rifle might be the way to go though...cheap, reliable, fun, cheap, light...good for plinking and an excellent "SHTF" rifle. You can pop 1k rounds of .22 LR into a backpack like it was nothing and hunt small game for months.

+1 It can be had for a little over $300. Probably less used. I was in the market for a .22lr as well but wasn't really thrilled about a semi-auto like the 10/22. I looked at the bolt-action Ruger 77/22 but they are toooo expensive for a .22, IMO. The CZ 452 will probably be my next purchase.

I hate saying this but I agree a custom Ruger 10/22 is a must have in a complete Firearms collection. There does not seem to be an equivalent brand that is both semi auto and magazine fed like the ruger 10/22.

But I still think Bill Ruger was a turncoat and or Benidict arnold to all gun owners with what he did with the magazine issue back in the early 90's and no I will not forgive and forget.

How 'bout the TOZ-78, made in the famous Tula Arsenal. Rimfirecentral and a few other places have great things to say about them and they are only $170. I personally haven't shot one yet, but that'll change in a couple of weeks
