I think the Mak 90 is banned by name doesn't matter who makes it. I maybe wrong about that. Worse thing that happens is he has it rebuilt on a different receiver using all the old parts.
personally I think he would get more if he sold the 90 and then just bought a cali legal AK. If he lived in california before 2000 and had 30 round mags he can reuse them so tell him not to sell them -
He did not have to live here. He would have just had to bring the mags to California prior to 1-1-2000. He could have just been visiting or passing through but, as long as they were in California for a second prior to the ban, he can bring them back to California.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

Allow me to quote the relevant Penal Code (non-relevant subsections deleted for brevity and clarity):
12020. (b) Subdivision (a) does not apply to any of the following:
(23) The importation of a large-capacity magazine by a person who
lawfully possessed the large-capacity magazine in the state prior to
January 1, 2000, lawfully took it out of the state, and is returning
to the state with the large-capacity magazine previously lawfully
possessed in the state.
For further insight, I recommend that you read the entirety of 12020. California Penal Codes are located online here.Last edited by Grumpyoldretiredcop; 03-20-2010, 1:38 AM.I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!Comment

It's just like the Saiga's. One importers Saigas are banned, another are not.
If it's not a Norinco MAK 90, it's going to be legal assuming it has a maglock or is rendered featureless. Please read the Calguns Wiki
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.
