The question here is, is it legal for him to store them in the OP's safe, with his wife having Power of Attorney?
If he passes, can they be transferred through bequest?

I don't see the problem wiith him storing them securely in a safe. If there's a problem with ownership of the safe, he could buy 50% interest in the safe for $1. AFAIK, there is no law against storing safes full of firarms anywhere you want to. I used to keep one at my office and I was not on the lease there.
