    Gun dye???

I remember an old friend of mine had this dye he would use on his guns if he dinged them or scratched them, that the exposed metal would turn black when he would put it on. Anyone have any clue what I'm looking for?? Thanks

To expand further on what others have said; you are looking for cold bluing. It's worth note that cold bluing is not really bluing but an oxidizer that darkens the metal and as such will not look quite the same but will help to hide damage to the finish. Real bluing requires harsh chemicals and heat treatment, hence the cold in cold bluing.

All of this is assuming you have a blued weapon and not a parkerized weapon. Parkerization will be much more grey in color with possibly a slight green tinge. I don't believe there is any way to repair a parkerized finish, but it is also much tougher than bluing.

There are cold blue pens that you can buy to touch up dings, they look like Sharpies. This is probably what your buddy uses.

Or for anodized stuff, I got a birchwood casey super black touch up pen, I got the flat black for my ar's, it works great. Better then a sharpie

Yeah, that's what I advised him to do, get a bluing touch up pen... not a Sharpie.
