Moving out of state, advice on transporting

So I am done with California. Born and raised here...just turned 40. I have decided the improvement in my family's quality of life by moving to the suburbs of Dallas is too good to pass up. Fortunately I can keep my current job and income too.

The oppressive firearm laws here do not have anything to do with my decision, though it is a bonus to be leaving them behind as well. (My dad who lives in FL couldn't find any local dealers who would ship a .30-06 to CA for instance)

In addition to the usual items, I will be transporting:
    1) multiple hand guns
    2) a rifle and shotgun
    3) several thousand rounds of ammunition (.22, 9mm, and 45ACP)
    6) Reloading supplies like gunpowder and primers

I have not yet decided if I am using a moving company, or containers that I pack, but either way, most of my belongings will be out of my possession for a large amount of time.

I am going to be driving my vehicle, but with a wife, 2 kids, 2 cats and a dog, just the bare essentials are going to take up a lot of room. Adding these items would be inconvenient, plus we will be spending at least one night on the way and traveling through CA, AZ, NM, and TX.

What are peoples suggestions and are their any laws I need to be aware, especially crossing several state lines? Can a 3rd party transport these items? What safety precautions should I be taking?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and time.

I just threw them in with the rest of the moving boxes and wrote on the outside "FRAGILE-Dishes". Moving company brought them safe and sound.

Also, moving companies are not responsible for lost or broken items. We couldn't do the 30 hour drive from LA to TX, so we flew. I wouldn't drive, especially when crossing strange towns/cities.

    Welcome to TX.

Congratulations on escaping! My wife and I are getting close to making an offer on a property in a free state, so hopefully we'll be having the same "problem" soon.

        Anyhoo...

In case you transport them in your car, per 18 USC 926A, if the gun is unloaded and in a locked container (and ammo for the gun is not accessible) you can drive right through a no-guns city/state and you are legal. This article from NRA has additional info on transporting firearms interstate.
