Long answer: it's a completely unnecessary announcement that a Private Message has been sent... kind of like calling someone to let them know you sent an fax or email.

Usually followed by a another completely unnecessary announcement along the lines of 'PM received'.

Especially frowned upon in 'FOR SALE' threads as back handed way to bump a thread.

Actually it's quite usefull in for sale adds, as your post can email you (to your Blackberry/Iphone/smartphone) to let you know you have a bite, it frees you from monitoring your thread every 10 minutes.

Are you better off than you were four years ago?

it does more than that. It lets others know tht there is interest in the item.

it depends on how they do it. I consider a post letting people know that the seller has responded to PMs as a good thing. It lets us know that the OP is not a "non responding seller". Now, if the OP abuses it as a way to evade the 24-hour bump rule, then it is a problem.

A worse problem is when people bump a thread, but first delete the previous bump to hide the fact that it was a <24-hour bump.

huh? I don't need to monitor my thread because I get an email telling me that someone posted in my thread that they sent me a PM? I already get an email letting me know that a PM was sent.
