a springfield xdm is NOT illegal in CA. it is not on the roster, so you can not dros one in CA unless you're exempt (a LEO) but you certainly can PPT one.

here is a link to the roster: http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/

any new pistol trying to make it onto the roster must have an LCI and a magazine disconnect. the XDm doesnt have a magazine disconnect nor does it have a LCI that fits CA's requirements.

If he purchases it specifically to sell it to you, that's a straw purchase. An immigrant to California from a free state can sell their XDm to you, or, a LEO can sell their XDm to you.

However, the term is widely used within the context of United States federal gun laws, whereby a straw purchase is defined as any purchase from a dealer holding a Federal Firearms License where the buyer conducting the transaction is acting as a proxy for another person. The law does not distinguish between someone who is purchasing on behalf of a person who legally cannot purchase or possess a firearm, and one who is not. In the United States, straw purchases are a felony violation of the Gun Control Act of 1968 for both the straw purchaser (who can also be charged with lying on Federal Form 4473) and the ultimate possessor. One of the questions on form 4473 is “I am the buyer of this firearm” and the purchaser must answer honestly yes or no, by checking the appropriate box in ink. However, purchase of a firearm as a bona fide gift for someone who can legally own such a firearm is permitted.
            don't do it.

Lots of great information in this forum.

Might I suggest you read more and post less and all the answers to your questions have been addressed many times over here. Start at the top of the forums and work you way throughout them and down.

Unless of course there is other type answers or something the DoJ agents are hoping to hear from members speaking off the cuff rather than representing the law abiding bunch that we are.

My radar just goes crazy when I read these kinds of questions.

I was always under the impression that a straw purchase specifically refers to purchasing for a PROHIBITED person.

That being said, I believe him buying it with the INTENT to sell it to you is still a no, no.
