    Jackson Arms

So the other day I was at jackson arms and I brought in my glock 17. I go to the rangemaster counter to get all set up and the manager asks if I have anyone with me over the age of 21. I told him I didn't. He then tells me that I need to lock up my gun and put it in the car because since I was under the age of 21 I am not allowed to have a handgun in my possesion. I tried explaining to him that it was given to me as a gift and I'm in the process of having it transfered into my name. He says that's impossible because in california you have to be 21 to own/posess a handgun. I didn't want to argue with the guy cause I still wanted to shoot my shotgun. So I guess my point is, did I do the right thing or should I have pressed further?

I'm no expert on handgun ownership/loaning laws so i'm not going to spread any FUD around here. But did you do the right thing..... YES! It's not wise to argue with anyone whose property you came to for whatever purpose. Their business means their rules- until you can furnish evidence contrary to the fact. It wouldnt have done you any good to argue, especially since you wisely brought something else to shoot. Posting it on CGN will definitely spread some light on the subject....

21 to PURCHASE a handgun. Any age to own or posses. The guy is ignorant.

But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself...A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague."......Cicero

To thedrickel, they said he was the manager. White guy, black hair and tattoos on his hands. I mean I knew that I was not breaking any laws by having the handgun. If he would have just said that it was range policy I wouldn't have even thought twice about it. But since he was spreading false information I thought I would share. Not only that, it was kind of embarassing. I had brought a girl with me and there were about 5 others around. Made me look like I was the one that didn't know what I was talking about when I was trying to explain the family transfer thing and being able to own a handgun at 18.

It is Jackson Arms' policy that handgun shooters below 21 years old must be accompanied by an adult. I know this since I have to sign for my son when he first shoot there and he was not 21 years old yet at that time.
In California the law requires among other things that a person must be 21 years old in order to buy a handgun. The age requirement for the purchse of rifles and shotguns is 18. I don't know though if there are any recent changes in the law.

The OP already mentioned that he wouldn't have minded so much if the manager had just said that it was store policy. What he's complaining about is the manager spreading misinformation about 18 year olds not being able to legally own handguns in California.

Come to Bullseye. I assume your handgun is an intra-familial transfer. Feel free to come blast away. If you want to rent one of ours, no problem.

I am playing devil's advocate here as I believe the issue is rather you can posses live ammunition.
Below is a cut and paste from http://www.nraila.org/statelawpdfs/casl.pdf

A minor under 16 may not possess a handgun, unless
they are accompanied by their parent or guardian while
participating in a legal recreation activity involving
firearms or has written permission to participate in
such activities. A minor under 16 may not possess live
ammunition except with the written permission or under
the supervision of a parent or guardian, or while going to
or from an organized lawful recreational or competitive
shooting activity or lawful hunting activity

Having said that... Given your age, you may want to spend $20 dollars on PFEC to get some offical documentation. By doing so, you don't need to confront the rangemaster and perhaps educate him/her as well. Afterall, they are no lawyers and CA laws are weave together by a bunch of jokers in Sac.

Soldier, bullseye was actually my first choice but I also wanted to shoot my rifle. I was told that I couldn't bring a rifle there. If you guys allowed rifles I would love to go there.

I wonder what he would have said if you had shown him your HSC. Probably the same FUD but at least it would have given him pause.

Halifax, that's the funny part. Jackson arms is where my mother and I did the HSC test and transfered the gun to my mom.
