    what thickness plate stop .308win

im looking to make some reactive steel targets for shooting, im desighning it to have the head swing when hit and have a spring push it back up and than a heart shot with same reactive style. but not sure what thickness plate i need to stop a .308win. lead core rounds type rounds. from 100yd to 1000yds. i have no problem needing to do some refilling in if it is going to dent the plate. Iw as tihnking 5/8 or so should do it.

ill try and get it semi finalized in solid works tomorrow during class, depending on how fast i get through the exercises.

Its not so much the thickness as it is the hardness. I'd suggest a minimal of 3/8" 500 Brinell
I'm only smiling at you while you talk to me because it's hilarious that you really think I give a crap about you.

As I've gotten older I thought I was gaining patience, then I realized I simply don't give a crap.

The I'd go for 3/4" or so and be prepared for it to dimple especially at close ranges (<300 yards). Also the softer stuff does not ring well - it only thuds.

Look for the old teeth from earth movers, bull dozers etc, they're gereally hardened and will take a lickin'. We have a few at the range that someone gave us and they've stood up to a couple of years of abuse.

i've seen those bells like used for boxing, fire alarms, and school you those old school type take some beating and last.

if i remember, it was able to take a .50 shot at ~200yrds and it only dented it. mrlonewolf was the one that brought it out.

I have some targets I made out of scrap 1018 cold rolled. They are 1/2" think and the .308 at 100 yrd will crater it about 1/4 deep. Farther out still takes a chunk out of them but not as bad.

I have a couple of targets I bought made from 3/8 AR500 steel and no damage other than right on the edge where it was flame or plasma cut as that area is annealed a bit.

Go to wideners and order some brinell 500 plate. If the plate is not heat treated than you need at least 3/4 of an inch steel plate, in order for the round to not go through it. The .308 round will still leave a good sized crater.
