I try and keep most of my stuff stored loose in ammo cans, just makes things easier. I will recommend that you have a few extra, empty small ammo cans hanging around so you can easily fill those up with what you need when going to the range, and not having to take full-size cans.
I usually keep a few cans full and keep extra stuff in boxes for ease. -
I have lots of ammo. I keep it in boxes so I know what each one is and more or less when I got it. I write month/year on each one. Even the loose stuff I buy I keep in their original box. Then the boxes all go into ammo cans, unless they are case lots of 500 to 1000.
If however you purchase the same stuff, I see no problem. Looks like you run through your supply pretty fast.

For what it's worth, I put all mine in ziplocks, labeled with caliber, make and date of manuf, with one of those little desiccant packs, and throw em into ammo boxes. I can fit way more ammo in the safe this way than when I just had them stacked in the original boxes.
I'll then break down the ammo boxes themselves and save them, and the innards, in the garage. If I ever need them, then I know where they are. I guess that's me being anal."I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy."Comment

I keep all of mine in their original boxes in ammo cans with dessicant. I also write the month and year of purchase and the price paid. The cans are marked on the outside telling me what is in there.Starve the beast, move to a free state.

Cardboard absorbs and retains moisture. For long term storage, best to ditch it and store the rounds loose with a dessicant in a USGI ammo can. Make sure it has good gasket seal though!
The stuff that gets shot up really fast, I don't worry about taking them out of the boxes.sigpic "On bended knee is no way to be free." - Eddie Vedder, "Guaranteed"

I keep all my range ammo in ziplock bags in ammo cans. My SD ammo I keep with the factory box with the purchase date on the box. I figure if I did have to defend myself or family it would be a good idea to have the rest of the batch of ammo with the box if the police needed to look at it.Violence is seldom the answer, but when it is the answer it is the only answerComment

Someone went out of his way to design a perfectly good receptacle specifically for ammunition(hence the name), and you're asking why is the paper box better?
seriously?

i keep mine in their original boxes... due to me not having a lot of the same caliber stored in 1 can. so it would make it harder to count/keep track of ammo if they are all mixed together loose.Originally posted by leelawBecause -ohmigosh- they can add their opinions, too?Originally posted by SoCalSig1911Preppers canceled my order this afternoon because I called them a disgrace... I keep the frequently used stuff (7.62x39, 5.56, 7.62x54R, .45, 9mm, .40 S&W, etc) loose in the cans, one caliber per can. I find it much easier to reload magazines if I can just reach in and grab a handful of rounds.
For the less frequently used stuff (like .300 WM, 7-30 Waters, 11x52 Dutch) , I keep the different calibers in their respective boxes in one can. All the cans are labeled and I just grab whatever cans I need when I'm off to the range. You will never, in your life, have a chance like this again.
If I were you, I would not pass this up. I would not let this go by...this is rare.
Come on...what harm??

I tend to store loose in a zip-loc bag with a dessicant, in an ammo can. I also like the MTM plastic ammo cans - i can fit 2k rounds of 223 in a can with no weight issue.
MTM known for quality USA made plastic ammo cans, they come in more size and colors than anyone else. Ideal ammo storage. Made of high impact polypropylene in Dayton Ohio.
Also, when I go from boxed to loose I tear off one of the box covers with the lot and serial # and put it in the zip-loc bag. This way if ever there's an issue I can still identify the ammo lot to the manufacturer if need be.
When I take a class, I can put one zip-loc of handgun and one zip-loc of rifle ammo in a single can and travel light.
Weekly range stuff I just leave in whatever box it came in because it gets shot pretty quickly.Comment
