I lost my private in range in a boating accident. It was very tragic. You would have to have been there to believe it!!!

Met some guys last summer back east, they just had a big farm.
They would just drive the truck out with the guns in the back, an ice chest, and have fun.

I dream of having enough land somewhere that I can shoot whenever I want. I recognize the feasibility of a private range depends on having the right topography, but does anyone have any thoughts on how much land is needed to do this safely and without angering the "neighbors".

I'd say it all depends on how big of a range you'd want, I used to have a 50 yard range in my parent's back yard, but I could do it safely.

My dream is to be able to wake up and walk out on my back porch with a cup of coffee and ring steel out to 1000+ yards.

So lets say a thousand yard range in the back yard, you would probably want your property to be at least 200 yards wide and have at least a quater of a mile or more beyond the last berm. So given that 1000 yards is just over a half a mile, and lets just say you have the house 150 to 200 yards from the road you'd want the land to be about a mile long.

That would make for a pretty long and thin piece of property, thats given that the neighbors' houses aren't too close to yours, unless you're shooting purely suppressed. Otherwise I'd either build baffles or side berms for the first hundred yards or plant alot of trees or so or just have the property be wider like 600 yards.

I have a built in 25 yard "private range" at my office building. Some Calgunners know what I mean.

The MN outdoor shooting range 'best practices' guide above has some good info.

Would be nice to have a little 'recreational parcel' nestled within the redwoods... something like this:

I drive about 10 min in the hills and shoot. I live in the hills and love being able to shoot any time.
