I just got an e-mail back from the good folks at the Palm Springs BLM office. I asked them specifically about a few areas that I though might be good to shoot at. Here is the cut-and-pasted letter. It may help someone out:
Hi, ----------, thank you for contacting us with your questions. BLMmanages various parcels of public lands throughout San Diego County.Recreational target shooting is allowed on these lands, provided it is donein a safe area and manner, and except where an area is specifically closedby order. Closed areas in San Diego County include Aguanga, Otay Mountain,La Posta, McCain Valley, and part of Table Mountain. BLM honors and enforces the State of California guidelines as to the typesof firearms and ammunition that can be used on public lands. As far as Iam aware, there are no other restrictions on the specific areas youmentioned; however, I am including our San Diego Law Enforcement Ranger onthis email, and he will be able to provide clarification and correction ifI'm giving you wrong information. I'm sure you are aware that once you have decided on which BLM lands youwish to shoot, you must be able to get to them on public access roads. BLMcannot give you permission to cross private property to gain access to BLMlands. Let us know if you have any other questions. ----So...my question is, does anyone have any experience with access to areas in North County? What about access to the area north of Hellhole Canyon. Specifically I asked them about:
Township 11 South, Range 1 West, Section 1.
T13S, R4E, Sec. 10
T9S, R3E, Sec. 7
I know about Orosco, and Palomar Divide Rd. I am looking for someplace different and that does not have gated access. I am thinking of going on a scouting trip next week but I wanted to save myself some time.
You can PM me if you don't want to give away your secret spot. I promise I won't trash it. I would appreciate any help.
Also, while I'm at it. Can I hike with an unloaded, concealed firearm but be in possession of ammunition on a different part of my person?
