Why do FFLs hate doing transfers?

I've always been told FFLs hate doing them because they lose money. It's usually something they stock that's coming in and they lose the sale. I can understand that but there's usually a reason behind someone transfering something sold in that exact store.

I've known FFLs to stop doing transfers for this reason or charge $100....of course that was Nevada.

It seems that most dealers would rather sell you something out of inventory. Let's suppose that it's because there's a higher markup on those. On gun purchases out of inventory, you still have to fill out the same form and examine it in the same way as a PPT, so you're still out the time.

The difference is that a PPT or out of state transfer should be a guaranteed $10+ for the time, rather than dealing with the tire kickers occupying salesmen and not buying anything. So the chance at making the same $50 is divided amongst the people just looking and those actually buying. I would think that sales take longer and there's a much greater chance that the time would be lost. As a dealer, you have to prioritize your time to get the greatest lift, and I would think that the optimal time spent by an employee would be handling transfers, not trying to make sales (barring the OLL/Obama craze, but the attitudes have been the same for years).

I still don't see how a PPT is less profitable than a sale, assuming that what I've read about there being a 10% markup on guns is true.

I have a friend whose Aunt works with DOJ....I swear one day I just need to take her down there and when I ask why they charge $40 she can whip out her DOJ ID and be like "Errr what were you saying, I must have not heard you through all the bull****." Maybe I should.......

I wonder how tight their buttholes will pucker up when they see who she works for.

That would be great. I will buy both you and her lunch just for that to happen if I could be there to see it.

I drove to Stockton recently for a PPT. Great helpful guys at the FFL without making any faces. I ended up buying 100+ dollars worth of stuff and would've bought more if they had those other items in stock. Will check the store out next time in the area again

If you go to Gretas in Simi Valley they charge an illegal fee of $40 which means they make $15 on the deal but if you ask them why its $40 the DOJ charges them $35 and they only make $5. They seem to ignore the laws and do what they want.

There's a place in San Jose that charges $70 for a PPT because their safety instructors have to do a safety demonstration......................

With everybody raising taxes (I'm sorry fees ), I'm surprised they (DOJ, etc.) haven't raise the PPT costs to at least $50.

I predict it will happen by years end.

Some hate it because it takes time away from boasting with their buddies and ignoring those not in the shops in crowd.

Yeah, a PPT takes time. Sure, it can be a hassle and might take time that could be spent with a customer buying from the shop. It takes up space in the safe. It's more work than the $10 fee. Etc etc etc.

It also brings people into the shop. People who might not otherwise come to the shop. People who might spend money in the shop because they're in the shop and see something they like. Those same people are probably more likely to return and spend money if they're treated well.

But what do I know? I'm just a potential customer.

I think these are my thoughts also, if I do a PPT somewhere I usually try to buy something else there while doing the paperwork or when I pick up my gun. I know at the old CVGS I picked up a crap load of ammo and other stuff because they were good guys and hooked me up on a deal with a gun. The guys over at Bullseye are great, they make it fast whether you are the buyer or seller. I have been to a couple of places down south where it is horrible. They tell you it's going to be an hour or two wait and end up helping you within 20 mins because you are still there. Kinda stupid because most of the time the other person I'm doing a PPT wants ammo or mags but puts them down when we are told it's a 1 hr wait for a PPT.

ppt is the same as one person selling to another like the old days when you could just sell the gun straight across?

How long has the fee been 10 bucks? When ppt dros started 10 bucks wasn't such a money looser maybe you even made a buck. Now all these years later its a looser.

I'll add to what some of the above posters have stated. Safe handling takes time, loging in and out takes time, finding the gun in the back takes time.

Not everybody in fact many people don't have their act together when transfering or buying a gun. No blame if you don't do it much you will need some hand holding.

There is more than $10 in labor involved plus 10 days or more for storage. Not everyone picks up on the 10th day. Bottom line it's a money loser for most FFLs.

yeah but its part of the deal to get your FFL license so.............IMO the FFLs need to stop crying and just do the PPT. yes i knwo you dontmake any money off a PPt then close up shop and get into a different line of business. And yes I am the guy who sent in that complaint about you.

To the FFls that do PPT without any complaining you guys rock.
