Taking people from other countries shooting?

In two weeks a few family friends from Denmark are going to be visiting.
They've never shot or even held a gun before as gun rights pretty much don't exist over there. They asked me if we could take a range trip so they can see what it's like to handle a real gun.

Is there any kind of legal problem with this? For some reason I thought I heard that you can't let a foreigner handle firearms. I have no idea if this is actually true so please enlighten me. They want to have a real American experience while they're here and I think it would be great for them to sample some of the freedoms we enjoy!

I sure hope not. I'm taking a coworker visiting from our London office to Angeles on Saturday. I think he and I have been to an indoor range before - he showed them his British passport, and no problems.

I was thinking of loaning him my copy of "How to Own a Gun and Stay Out of Jail", and directing him to the list of convictions that would preclude a California citizen from owning or operating a firearm, and give him the option to decline to go shooting if any of them apply to him.

I have taken plenty of foregin visitors shooting at various indoor and outdoor ranges in the Los angeles area and never had a problem. If they've done jail time in their home countries it may be a gray area, but if they have clean records have at it.

All that our local range required was ID, in this case their passport, to rent and shoot firearms.

I've taken a few Brit friends out shooting. They all got into it but then basically said, "Very interesting. But I have no interest in owning one."

I think they are supposed to have hunting license.

As long as you possess a valid hunting license from a State within the United States, you may rent firearms to hunt and to use at a shooting range. If you do not have the hunting license, your possession of the firearms and ammunition will be unlawful. The hunting license does not have to be from the State where you will be possessing the guns and ammunition.

However, for the most part it seems to be a moot point. I guess the logic is that if you are renting a gun from range, as long as you are within the premise, owners can take posession of the pistol, so it is a bit murky area.

In practice, I've seen many ranges let foreigners shoot/rent guns without checking the hunting license. So not a problem is my guess.

I plan on going over some gun safety before we get to the range.

It always baffles me when people do things like that. I mean c'mon, it's a friggen GUN, everyone knows (I would hope) they can kill so why the impulse to pull the trigger!?

They have the same rights as you and I do, but they haven't demanded that their government and laws honor them.

I've taken many friends from Japan shooting many times. There is no problem as long as they bring proper identification and don't fall into a category of an prohibited person.
