About 4 years ago, I was involved in a minor assault and battery, which the judge deemed me guilty . I completed the assigned community service time back then and heard that I could expunge it from my record after 3 years, which I have yet to do.
Not realizing this was an issue with gun ownership, I went to buy a hunting shotgun recently and was denied by the DOJ. I understand now that there is a 10 year non-gun ownership limitation which comes with the misdemeanor by state law. I have no other such violations on my record, nor have I ever had any.
If I complete the expungement from my record, would this allow me then to buy and own a hunting shotgun, or is there any other recourse which would allow me to own and use a gun? I'd really like to join my friends and go bird hunting in the near future... your constructive advice would be greatly appreciated.
